Getting Rich in OSRS: Slayer, Calfight Queen, and King Black Dragon Adventures
Apr-14-2025 PSTIf you're like me and need to make some OSRS gold—and by that, I mean serious GP—you might be tempted to jump into some tried-and-true money-making methods. There's Barrows, flipping on the GE, skilling, and even GWD. But instead of all that, I decided to go with the most nostalgic and fun way to make a bank: Slayer. And my current task? Calfight.
Naturally, that means Calkfight Queen (KQ) time. She's tough, she's nostalgic, and she has some decent drops if you stick with her long enough. Here's how it went down over 10 hours of Slayer content, hopping between KQ and King Black Dragon (KBD), getting loot, dying (a lot), and hopefully making some serious GP.
The Setup: Calfight Queen Slayer Task
Before diving into the boss grind, I had to check out my Collection Log. At the time of starting this adventure, I had 204 KQ kills, no pet, one KQ head, and no jar. Honestly, kind of underwhelming, especially since I'm hunting for that pet. The Kalphite Princess is one of the more iconic ones, with that dual-phase color scheme—she's a beauty.
My Gear Setup for KQ
This is what I took for the KQ fights:
• Slayer Helmet (task bonus)
• Karils top + Verac's skirt
• Karils' crossbow or Caris Partisan of Breaching (depending on phase)
• Warhammer (for special attack)
• Divine Super Combat Potion
• Antidote++
• Sharks
• Thralls (for a bit of DPS help, though I stopped using them halfway through)
• House Teleport Tabs
• No Dramen Staff, thanks to Elite Desert Diary
• BIQ Fairy Ring Code – leads straight to the entrance
• Permanent rope shortcut unlocked from the Desert Hard Diary
• Agility shortcut to skip the long walk
Pro Tips
If you haven't done your Desert Hard Diary, do it. It's 100% worth it just to skip the annoying entrance each time. Also, having the agility to skip the long run into the lair saves massive time. Every second counts when you're grinding a boss like KQ.
The Fight: KQ Kills, Loot, and the Drama
So there I am, geared up and diving into the KQ lair. I'm using the Caris Partisan of Breaching, which is OP against Calphites. If you haven't tried it, stop what you're doing and give it a go. It hits hard, especially on crush style (which KQ is weak to). Combine that with a couple of successful Dragon Warhammer specs at the start, and KQ melts like butter.
Early Kills: A Taste of the RNG
A few kills in and BOOM, Dragon Chainbody. Now, back in the day, this would've been 10m+ and the peak of fashion scape. Nowadays? 200k-ish. Still cool to see, especially for the nostalgia.
Around the one-hour mark, I was sure the game was going to give me the pet. KQ was just that kind of boss—grinds you down mentally, then blesses you. But nope. No pet. Just trash loot and a moment of almost dying because I forgot to tick-eat. (Pro tip: Always tick-eat, friends.)
Dragon Loot and Epic Moments
After the resurrection and a few more kills, Dragon 2H Sword dropped. Twice! That's a 1 in 256 drop. Pretty sick to see, even if it's only worth about 130k now. Still, rare drops = dopamine.
Another couple of hours later: Dragon Pickaxe! That's a 1 in 400 drop, and even though it's only around 700k GP these days, it felt amazing to see. Classic drop, nostalgic feels, and a solid payday. Too bad I died again right after…
The Total Tally After KQ Grind
• KQ Kills: 167
• Slayer XP: 87,430
• Loot Highlights:
o 2x Dragon 2H Swords
o 2x Dragon Chainbodies
o 1x Dragon Pickaxe
Deaths: 3
Gear Retrieval Cost: ~900k total
Still no pet, sadly. Only 366 KQ kills in total, though, so I guess I'm still below drop rate (1 in 3,000). But man, it's hard not to be disappointed when you grind this hard and don't get that lucky orange text.
Moving On: King Black Dragon Task
After KQ, I got a new Slayer task: King Black Dragon. Perfect, because I needed a break from the KQ stress and the back-to-back magic hits.
KBD Gear Setup
Here's what I took to the KBD lair:
• Twisted Bow (yes, I'm that guy)
• Black D'hide
• Slayer Helm (imbued)
• Necklace of Anguish
• Barrows Gloves
Ring of Shadows
• Mixed Hide Boots (only like 15k GP!)
• Dragon Arrows (50 per trip)
• Ranging Potion
• Extended Anti-fire
• Antidote++
• 2x Super Restores
• Sharks
• House Tab
• Burning Amulet (for quick entrance)
Collection Log & Pet Goals
I had 804 KBD kills already, and two Dragonic Visage drops (crazy lucky). No Prince Black Dragon, though. This pet is easily my favorite in the game—a tiny, flappy little dragon. Extremely underrated.
KBD's mechanics? Simple. Just click boss, dodge flames, and eat food when needed. If you're frozen, that's your cue to chomp down on a shark. Otherwise, it's a basic DPS check.
Final Thoughts
Did I get rich? Kind of. Between the drops, Slayer XP, and the dopamine from rare loot, I made some decent cash—though the gear retrieval costs took a chunk out of it. And no pets. That part hurt.
Would I recommend Slayer bossing to others trying to make bank in OSRS? Absolutely—if you're not in a rush and you enjoy a challenge. The loot may not always be guaranteed, but the thrill of the hunt, the nostalgia of fighting classic bosses, and the satisfaction of improving your PVM skills make it worth the grind.
