How to Efficiently Kill the King Black Dragon in OSRS

Sep-11-2024 PST

Welcome to another OSRS guide! Today, we'll be discussing an efficient, no-nonsense approach to killing the King Black Dragon (KBD), one of the iconic bosses in the game. This KBD task was one of the last ones I completed. So, let's dive into how to slay the KBD with minimal risk, maximal efficiency, and some killer loot along the way!

Why Melee is the Best Setup for Killing the King Black Dragon

There are various ways to approach killing the KBD in OSRS, but my personal favorite is melee. Here's why:

1. Efficiency: With melee, especially if you're using a Slayer task setup, you can rack up loads of kills per trip, making it ideal for pet hunting or Slayer task completion.

2. No Need for the Dragon Hunter Lance: You might be wondering, “Do I need the Dragon Hunter Lance for this boss?” The answer is an emphatic no! The Osmumten's Fang is, without a doubt, one of the best weapons to use for KBD. It’s more affordable than the Dragon Hunter Lance and just as effective when fighting dragons due to its stab damage bonus.

3. Black Dragon Slayer Task: If you're on a Black Dragon Slayer task, you get the bonus of wearing the Slayer helmet, which significantly boosts your damage and accuracy.

Now, let’s go over the exact gear setup I used for this encounter.

Gear Setup

  • Osmumten's Fang: This is hands down your best-in-slot (BIS) weapon for KBD. Its stab damage is extremely effective against the KBD, and it's far cheaper than a Dragon Hunter Lance.

  • Slayer Helmet: If you're on a Slayer task, this is a must-have. Otherwise, a cheaper alternative is the Neitiznot Helm.

  • Amulet of Blood Fury: This piece of gear is a game-changer. It provides healing based on damage dealt, which means you can extend your trips and reduce food consumption. You’ll thank yourself for using it.

  • Black Dragonhide Body and Chaps: While you can use other armors like Karil's or even Justiciar, I recommend Black D'hide. Why? Because it offers excellent protection against the KBD's magic and ranged attacks while keeping your risk low if you get killed by a PKer.

  • Dragonfire Shield: Essential to negate the KBD’s dragonfire attack and provide solid defense.

  • Barrows Gloves: While Ferocious Gloves offer more offensive bonuses, Barrows Gloves provide a more balanced setup.

  • Dragon Boots: These are a more affordable and nearly as effective substitute for Primordial Boots.

  • Ring of Suffering: The recoil effect on this ring helps chip away at the KBD’s health passively while offering substantial defensive bonuses.

Low-Risk Wilderness Strategy

Since the KBD's lair is located deep in the Wilderness, PKers are a risk. However, there’s a simple method to minimize your Wilderness risk:

1. World Switching: Before you teleport to the Wilderness, use the World Switcher to find an Australian server with high ping. PKers tend to avoid these worlds due to the lag.

2. Teleportation: Use a Burning Amulet to teleport directly to the Lava Maze, just a few steps away from the KBD lair. You’ll only be in the Wilderness for about 20 seconds before you enter the safety of the lair.

3. Protect Item: If you’re extra cautious, activate the Protect Item prayer before heading into the Wilderness. This ensures that in the unlikely event you get PKed, you'll only lose minimal gear. If you're not using a Slayer helmet, swap it out for a Neitiznot Helm to lower your risk even further.

Inventory Setup

Your inventory should be optimized for survival and efficiency:

  • Divine Super Combat Potion: Boosts your attack, strength, and defense for longer periods without draining stats.

  • Extended Super Antifire Potion: Crucial for mitigating the KBD’s dragonfire attacks.

  • Super Restores: These will keep your prayer points up while also restoring any stats drained by the KBD's special attack.

  • Antidote++: Protects against poison, as there are poison spiders near the entrance.

  • Food: Anglerfish and Manta Rays are great for healing. With the Amulet of Blood Fury doing most of the healing, you won’t need as much food.

  • Teleportation Items: A Burning Amulet for teleporting to the KBD lair and a house teleport or any other one-click teleport for escaping.

Killing the King Black Dragon

Once you're geared up and in the KBD lair, here’s how to handle the fight:

1. Pre-Fight Setup: Before pulling the lever to enter the KBD’s lair, drink your Extended Super Antifire, take a sip of your Divine Super Combat Potion, and ensure you have Protect from Melee on.

2. Engage the KBD: The key here is to simply smack the KBD with Osmumten’s Fang. It deals massive damage thanks to the stab bonus, and you’ll easily get through 20–30 kills per trip. Don’t worry about RNG; even if you hit a few zeros, overall, the fight is straightforward.

3. Turn Off Prayers Between Kills: This will help conserve prayer points, allowing you to extend your trips.

The KBD’s respawn timer is short—about five seconds—so you can maximize kills with very little downtime. In between kills, let the Amulet of Blood Fury do the work by healing you with each hit.

Risk Mitigation and PKer Avoidance

You may wonder how often PKers show up in the KBD area. While it’s technically Wilderness, if you follow this method, your risk is practically zero:

  • Teleport to an Australian Ping Server: PKers tend to avoid these worlds because the high ping makes it difficult for them to execute precise attacks.

  • Wilderness Time: You’ll only be in the Wilderness for about 20 seconds from the time you teleport to the Lava Maze until you enter the KBD lair.

  • Minimized Risk: With Protect Item on and minimal gear risk, the worst-case scenario is losing around 300k GP, which is hardly a big deal in OSRS terms.

Loot and Pet Hunting

Let’s be real here—the loot from the KBD is underwhelming. After 18 kills, I only made about 190k in total. However, the true prize is the pet, the Prince Black Dragon. This rare pet is the main reason people kill the KBD. The pet is a 1/3000 drop, which is achievable, especially when killing the KBD on Slayer tasks.

If you're looking to make OSRS Gold, Brutal Black Dragons are a much better option, offering far more GP per hour than the KBD. But for those on a Slayer grind or aiming for the Prince Black Dragon pet, KBD is worth the effort.

Conclusion

And there you have it, folks! That’s the no-nonsense, low-risk, high-efficiency guide to killing the King Black Dragon in OSRS. If you're hunting for that sweet Prince Black Dragon pet or just trying to finish a Black Dragon Slayer task, this method will get you through it quickly and safely.

Stay tuned for more OSRS content, and as always, happy grinding!
