How to Prepare for Yama in Ironman

May-05-2025 PST

With the highly anticipated release of Yama just around the corner in OSRS, many players, especially Ironman accounts, are scrambling to get prepared. Yama is a brand-new duo boss slated to be tougher than the Desert Treasure 2 (DT2) bosses, meaning it's not for the faint of heart. As an endgame player, I've started preparing my Ironman to be ready for day one attempts. In this article, I'll walk you through everything you might want to stockpile, gear considerations, OSRS gold and what combat strategies to think about for this demonic boss.

What Is Yama?

Before diving into supply lists and gear prep, let's quickly go over what we know about Yama.

Yama is designed to be a late-game duo boss, meaning you'll need a friend to take it on. According to Jagex, Yama is going to be more difficult than any of the DT2 bosses—Vardorvis, Leviathan, Duke Sucellus, and Whisper. If those bosses are still giving you trouble, Yama might be a step too far for now. But if you're up for a challenge or want to jump in on day one while the mechanics are still being figured out, this could be an exciting opportunity.

Yama is also confirmed to be a demon, which gives us some clues on how to approach the fight. Demonbane weaponry and spells may come in handy, and there's a good chance the Arceuus spellbook will shine here.

General Supplies You'll Need

Let's start with the basics. As an Ironman, preparing for a new boss means thinking ahead and stockpiling useful supplies. Here are the essentials I'm gathering:

• Brews and Restores: Saradomin brews and Super restores are a must-have for high-damage fights.

• Prayer Potions: If brews/restores aren't enough, you'll want plenty of extra prayer support.

• High-Healing Food: Think manta rays, sharks, karambwans, anglerfish, etc.

• Antivenom: It's speculative, but if venom mechanics show up, better safe than sorry.

• Stamina Potions: In case the fight requires a lot of running, stamina potions can be a lifesaver.

• Prayer Enhance Potions: The new prayer-regeneration potions might prove useful.

• Runes: Stock up on blood, death, soul, cosmic, and nature runes—especially if using the Arceuus spellbook.

The Arceuus spellbook could be particularly important because Yama is a demon. Key spells include:

• Vow of Arceuus: Reduces damage from demons.

• Dark Demonbane: High damage output versus demons.

• Mark of Darkness: Increases your damage output when used with Demonbane spells.

• Death Charge: Restores special attack energy when you kill something, which is excellent for sustain and burst damage phases.

Gear Preparation and Speculation

Since Yama is expected to be a harder boss than the DT2 line-up, we're probably looking at a high gear requirement for efficient kills. If you're planning on going in on day one, here's what you should consider bringing.

Combat Styles

We don't know Yama's exact mechanics yet, but early indicators suggest a hybrid or tribrid fight. So it's smart to prepare two combat styles.

• Melee + Ranged: A flexible combo often used in high-level PvM.

• Melee + Magic: Especially useful if Arceuus spells turn out to be strong.

Being able to swap styles mid-fight could be critical, especially if Yama has phases or adds with specific weaknesses.

Defense Reduction Weapons

Defense reduction is a powerful mechanic in PvM, and it's especially helpful for new bosses where you don't know what to expect. Bring whatever you have access to:

• Ralos (Toenail of Ralos): A strong candidate, as Jagex tends to introduce niche items and then make them relevant later. This item hasn't had much use yet, so now could be its time.

• Dragon Warhammer

• Bandos Godsword

• Elder Maul

• Bone Dagger: For budget builds, this still works well with its poison and defense-reduction special.

Main Weapons for Damage Output

Yama being a demon makes Demonbane weapons a go-to option. These include:

• Scorching Bow

• Purging Staff

• Emberlight: If you don't have this, even Aerrite could suffice.

High-end raid weapons will still likely be slightly better overall:

• Twisted Bow (T-Bow): Always strong, especially against high-magic enemies.

• Shadow of Tumeken: Fantastic for magic-heavy loadouts.

• Scythe of Vitur: Still one of the best melee weapons for high-health targets.

Other good options include:

• Soulreaper Axe

• Noxious Scythe

• Bow of Faerdhinen (with full crystal armor)

• Trident of the Swamp

• Vertus wand with spellbook spells

Also, if the fight has lots of enemies spawning (like adds or minions), the Venator Bow might have a strong niche role thanks to its chaining projectile mechanic.

Armor and Utility Items

When it comes to armor, there are a few directions you can go depending on your loadout:

Utility Gear

• Serpentine Helm: If poison or venom plays a role in the fight.

• Zulrah Scales: Keep a good stock for recharging blowpipe, toxic trident, or other poisoned gear.

• Noxious Scythe or Blowpipe: May be necessary if mechanics require poisoning enemies (like Phase 2 of Verzik in TOB).

Slash-Based Gear

Yama drops a new slash-based armor set, which implies that slash weapons may be particularly effective. This means:

• Bellator Ring: Increases slash accuracy and damage, likely to be very useful.

• Abyssal Whip / Scythe of Vitur / Inquisitor's Mace: If any of them have a slash option, prioritize those.

Tank Items and Survivability

• Blood Fury Amulet: Passive healing on melee hits.

• Barrows Gloves

• Echo Boots: Another utility item that can help mitigate damage.

• Elysian Spirit Shield: Great for reducing chip damage, especially in the early days of the boss when mechanics are still being figured out.

Duo Preparation

Yama is a duo-only boss, so you're going to need a friend. Don't wait until the last minute—book your best duo partner now. Make sure they're bonded and ready. Share gear ideas, compare your banks, and talk strategy. If you go in with a coordinated partner, your chances of success will go up significantly.

Going in blind together and learning mechanics as a team is one of the most fun experiences in OSRS PvM. Yama's release will be chaotic, challenging, and rewarding.

Final Thoughts

This list should help you cover all the key areas for prepping your Ironman account for Yama. And don't forget to enjoy the process. First-day bossing is a rare and thrilling experience in RuneScape. Whether you get a lucky drop or just enjoy learning mechanics, it's one of the best parts of the game.
