Old School RS: Wild Guthix Sleeps Quest Update

May-25-2024 PST

Recently, Jagex has unveiled the details of the rewards associated with this quest, and they are both different from the original RS 3 version and what was initially pitched for OSRS. Let's delve into what makes this update so thrilling.

The Quest and Its Legacy

"Wild Guthix Sleeps" is a beloved quest from the RS3 era, continuing the epic Mahjarrat storyline. The original RS3 version was notable for its engaging plot and challenging content, which culminated in the introduction of Tormented Demons as a formidable enemy, dropping the highly sought-after Dragon Claws. In OSRS, however, Jagex has opted to retain Dragon Claws as a raid drop, ensuring that their value and rarity remain intact.

Instead of simply rehashing old content, Jagex has introduced a fresh array of rewards for OSRS players, namely the Demonbane Trifecta. This includes three powerful new weapons that require crafting and offer unique abilities and enhancements specifically against demonic foes.

Demonbane Trifecta Weapons

1. Arclight Upgrade

The first weapon in the Demonbane Trifecta is an upgrade to the beloved Arclight, renowned for its effectiveness against demonic creatures. This new melee weapon significantly enhances Arclight's capabilities:

    • Higher Accuracy and Strength: It boasts a much higher stab and slash accuracy and an additional five melee strength bonus.

    • Special Effect: It retains the 70% increased damage and accuracy versus demons.

    • Special Attack: The upgraded weapon's special attack can lower an opponent’s strength, attack, and defense by up to 15%, compared to Arclight's 10%.

This makes it exceptionally powerful against bosses like the Abyssal Sire, Tormented Demons, and Demonic Gorillas, as well as in PvM (Player versus Monster) scenarios.

2. Scorching Bow

The second weapon is the Scorching Bow, which caters to rangers:

    • High Ranged Accuracy and Strength: It comes with 124 ranged accuracy and 40 ranged strength.

    • Increased Damage and Accuracy Against Demons: It offers a 30% increase in both.

    • Special Attack: Its special attack, costing only 25% special energy, can bind an enemy for five ticks, dealing one damage. If the target is a demon, it binds them for 20 ticks and deals an additional five damage.

This feature could be especially useful in PvM, allowing players to immobilize powerful demonic bosses like K'ril Tsutsaroth and Cerberus, making the Scorching Bow a versatile and strategic weapon.

3. Ignited Staff

The final piece of the Trifecta is the Ignited Staff, which is perhaps the most intriguing:

    • Magic and Melee Attributes: It has a magic attack of 37, an 83 crush attack, and 62 melee strength, along with a 10% magic damage bonus.

    • Auto-Casting Demonbane Spells: This staff can auto-cast combat spells from the Arceuus spellbook, specifically doubling the bonuses of Demonbane spells.

    • Special Attack: The special attack costs 25% special energy and, upon killing a demon, restores the special energy and reduces the attack delay by three ticks.

With the ability to double the effects of Mark of Darkness, this staff is set to be a game-changer in magic combat, providing significant boosts to damage and accuracy.

Crafting and Requirements

To craft these powerful weapons, players will need to achieve a crafting level of 74 in the relevant skill (Smithing for melee, Fletching for ranged, and Crafting for magic). This ensures that the new gear remains exclusive and rewarding to those who have invested time and effort into their skills.

Unlike in some other instances in OSRS, there will be no NPC to assist in crafting these weapons. This means players, including Ironman accounts, will need to gather the necessary materials and meet the skill requirements themselves, adding another layer of challenge and achievement.

Burning Claws: The New Tier 65 Weapon

In addition to the Demonbane Trifecta, a new item called Burning Claws will be introduced. These fill the gap between the Dragon Dagger and Dragon Claws, offering players a powerful mid-tier weapon:

    • Special Effect: The special attack has a burn effect, dealing 10 damage over 40 ticks, which can stack up to five times.

    • Special Energy Requirement: It only requires 30% special energy, allowing for multiple consecutive uses to maximize the burn effect.

This new addition offers an exciting alternative for players looking to diversify their combat tactics and provides a nod to the traditional Tormented Demon drop without overshadowing the coveted Dragon Claws.

The "Wild Guthix Sleeps" quest update for OSRS is shaping up to be one of the most exciting developments in the game this year. By introducing the Demonbane Trifecta and the Burning Claws, Jagex is providing players with fresh, powerful tools and enhancing the overall gameplay experience. These updates respect the legacy of the original quest while bringing innovative new elements to OSRS, ensuring that both veterans and new players have something to look forward to.

With the new weapons offering significant strategic advantages against demonic enemies and requiring players to engage deeply with the crafting system, the update promises to bring both challenges and rewards. As always, community feedback and real-world application will determine the ultimate impact of these changes, but the excitement and anticipation surrounding the "Wild Guthix Sleeps" quest are palpable.
