OSRS AFK Sailing Shipwreck Salvaging Guide
Nov-24-2025 PSTShipwreck Salvaging has quickly become one of the most popular AFK Sailing activities in Old School RuneScape. With generous XP rates, consistent loot, and simple gameplay, it’s an excellent option for both mains and Ironman accounts. Irons especially benefit from the constant stream of seeds, repair kits, cannonballs, and alkaballs—while mains can sell everything for tidy profits.
If you're looking for a laid-back method that rewards you every few seconds and takes little attention, Shipwreck Salvaging is easily one of the best options Sailing has to offer.
How Shipwreck Salvaging Works
The core gameplay loop is straightforward: Sail to a Shipwreck icon on your minimap. Find an active shipwreck in that area. Release your salvaging hook and begin AFK salvaging. Once the location “dries up” after about three minutes, move to the next wreck. Store salvage in your cargo hold, then process it for XP and rewards.
You gain Sailing XP every time your hook pulls up salvage. The loot stays in your cargo hold until you either visit a salvaging station or install one on your ship.
Unlock Requirements & Progression
Level 15 – Bronze Salvaging Hook
At level 15 Sailing, you unlock your first salvaging hook and can start salvaging small shipwrecks. You’ll gain XP on every successful pull, and all salvage goes to your cargo hold.
Processing Salvage
At first, you’ll need to return to ports to process salvage at a Salvaging Station, which awards: Additional Sailing XP/Seeds/Repair kits/Cannonballs/Alkaballs/Various resources.
Level 42 – Install a Salvaging Station on Your Boat
This is a massive upgrade because it makes salvaging a fully AFK loop with zero port trips. To build a Salvaging Station:
1. Dig at the Panimmonium between the two trees to obtain a key.
2. Travel to Chincha Island and use the key to open a chest containing the schematics.
3. Go to any Shipwright and install the facility using:
• 4 Teak planks
• 16 Steel nails
Once installed, you can process salvage anywhere on the ocean.
Level 50 – Access to the Sloop
The Sloop is a huge quality-of-life boost:
• Supports two salvaging hooks instead of one
• Allows crew members to salvage for you
More hooks = more XP and more loot per hour.
Hiring Crew Members
Crewmates make Shipwreck Salvaging even more AFK.
Level 40 – First Crew Member
Head to the Port Sarim pub and speak to Jobless Jim. He will join your crew automatically.
Level 55 – Second Crew Member
This is the perfect time to visit the Desert Mining Camp and hire Captain Sad, assuming you've completed The Tourist Trap. To enter, kill the camp guard captain for a key.
Managing Crew
Use the Crew Register at the Panimmonium. Each crewmate has different proficiencies. For salvaging, prioritise Deck Handiness.
Best Crewmate for Salvaging
At level 60 Sailing, travel to Crandor to hire Cabin Boy Jenkins, who boasts Level 4 Deck Handiness—the best early pick.
To reach Crandor:
• Enter the Karamja Volcano
• Follow the path to the end
• Take the rope shortcut
Crew XP Mechanics
When crew members salvage, you receive only 50% XP. Always operate one hook yourself for optimal gains. Only let both crewmates salvage when you are processing at your station.
Maximizing XP & Profit
Follow these key tips for the best results:
• Always salvage the highest-level shipwrecks possible
• Use the best tier of salvaging hook available
• Upgrade your cargo hold for more storage
• For Irons seeking seeds:
• Hemp seeds → Barracuda shipwrecks
• Cotton seeds → Large shipwrecks
Shipwreck Locations by Level
Level 15 – Small Shipwrecks
Right next to the Panimmonium. These are generally not worth doing—consider doing Port Tasks instead.
Level 26 – Fisherman Shipwrecks
Located just south of Catherby.
Level 35 – Barracuda Shipwrecks
Found inside the Tempered Tantrum.
You need:
• Oak Mast
• Iron Helm
• Oak Hull
Level 53 – Large Shipwrecks
A great spot sits directly underneath the Great Kourend Crunch.
Level 64 – Pirate Shipwrecks
Located south of Pest Control.
Level 73 – Mercenary Shipwrecks
Spawns in the southwestern corner of the map, easily accessible from Deep Fin Point.
Level 80 – F’mnic Shipwrecks
Located in the far northern waters.
Level 87 – Merchant Shipwrecks
The highest-tier shipwrecks, found north of Zeah.
Efficiency Tip
Many locations allow you to park between two wreck spawn points. You can pivot your ship back and forth without having to sail away.
Sailor’s Amulet – Teleport Utility
While salvaging, you may randomly obtain the Sailor’s Amulet, which can be charged with Law runes and Water runes.
It teleports to:
• The Panimmonium
• Port Roberts (after tagging its Sailor Marker)
• Deep Fin Point (after tagging its Sailor Marker)
This makes moving between salvage locations extremely convenient.
Unlock Shipwrecks 2 Levels Earlier – The Keg of Whirlpool Surprise
Installing a Keg of Whirlpool Surprise gives:
• +2 permanent Sailing boost
• All crewmates have a minimum Deck Handiness of 2
• Drinking from the keg grants +3 temporary Sailing boost
How to unlock it:
1. Complete the Shark Trial in the Tempered Tantrum to receive a Barrel Stand.
2. Talk to Rum-Ralph, who will give you two beers.
3. Purchase 23 additional Whirlpool Surprises from Steve at the Panimmonium.
4. Build the keg stand on your ship and fill it with 25 total Whirlpool Surprises.
This upgrade lets you access shipwreck tiers two levels earlier, massively speeding up leveling.
Conclusion
Shipwreck Salvaging is one of the cleanest, most rewarding AFK methods in OSRS Sailing. Whether you’re an Ironman looking for seeds and supplies or a main hunter looking for consistent OSRS gold, salvaging checks all the boxes. Enjoy cruising across the seas, raking in XP and profit with minimal effort. Happy sailing—cheers!
