OSRS AFK Shark Fishing Guide

Mar-16-2026 PST

Fishing sharks is one of the most classic and relaxing money-making and training methods in Old School RuneScape. While it is not the fastest experience method available, it remains a popular choice because of its AFK nature and consistent profit. Sharks are also one of the most widely used food items in the game, making them a stable resource to gather.

This guide explains the requirements, locations, experience rates, profit potential, and useful equipment for fishing sharks efficiently.

Requirements to Fish Sharks

To start catching sharks, you will need:

· Level 76 Fishing

· A harpoon

That is the only strict requirement, making shark fishing relatively accessible once you reach the appropriate Fishing level. Harpoon fishing spots that yield sharks are labeled “Net/Harpoon” spots. These can be found in several locations throughout Gielinor, but the most efficient location is inside the Fishing Guild.

Getting to the Fishing Guild

The best place to fish sharks is the Fishing Guild. This location offers a significant advantage: an invisible +7 Fishing level boost, which improves your catch rate.

There are two convenient ways to reach the guild:

Skills Necklace Teleport

Use a Skills Necklace to teleport directly to the Fishing Guild. After arriving:

1. Head north past the two doors.

2. Continue onto the fishing platform where the shark fishing spots are located.

Camelot Teleport

You can also teleport to Camelot using the standard spellbook or a teleport tablet.

From Camelot:

1. Run southwest toward the Fishing Guild.

2. Enter the guild and proceed to the fishing platforms.

Shark Fishing Locations Inside the Guild

Within the Fishing Guild, there are two main areas where players commonly fish sharks.

Southeastern Platform

This is the most reliable fishing area. A shark fishing spot is always active here, making it the preferred location for players who want uninterrupted AFK fishing.

Northeastern Platform

This platform is closer to the bank and the deposit box. However, the fishing spots here sometimes disappear temporarily, meaning you may need to move around to find an active spot. Because of this inconsistency, many players choose the southeastern platform for uninterrupted fishing.

Experience Rates and Profit

Each shark catch grants 110 Fishing XP. Average rates vary depending on your Fishing level:

High-level players

· Around 17,000 Fishing XP per hour

· Roughly 160 sharks caught per hour

· About 72,000 GP profit per hour (depending on market price)

Lower-level players

· Around 90 sharks per hour

At typical market values, a raw shark often sells for roughly 465 GP on the Grand Exchange. While this profit is modest compared to high-end PvM activities, shark fishing is extremely AFK and requires very little attention.

Banking Your Sharks

Once your inventory fills with sharks:

1. Head northwest from the fishing platforms.

2. Use the deposit box or the nearby bank booth.

3. Return to the fishing area and continue.

The short distance to the bank is one of the reasons the Fishing Guild remains the most efficient shark fishing location.

Harpoon Options

Several harpoons can be used for shark fishing, each offering different benefits.

Regular Harpoon

The basic harpoon is the simplest option.

· Purchased from fishing shops or the Grand Exchange

· Costs around 55 GP

· Must remain in your inventory while fishing

This is perfectly viable for players just starting shark fishing.

Barbtail Harpoon

The barbtail harpoon is an upgrade that can be equipped, saving one inventory slot.

Ways to obtain it:

· Catching a Barbtail Kebbit with 33 Hunter

· Buying it from the Grand Exchange (around 340 GP)

While the performance is similar to a regular harpoon, the inventory slot savings can be helpful.

Dragon Harpoon

The Dragon Harpoon is the best standard option for shark fishing.

Features include:

· Equippable, freeing an inventory slot

· Special attack that boosts Fishing level by +3

· Passive 20% increased catch rate when harpoon fishing

· Requires 60 Attack to equip

It can be obtained through drops from bosses such as Tempoross or purchased from the Grand Exchange for roughly 2.4 million OSRS gold.

For long-term fishing training, this harpoon significantly improves efficiency.

Using the Fish Sack Barrel (Shark “Sharkler” Method)

Another option for catching sharks faster is using shark bait via shark lures (often referred to as the Sharkler-style fishing method).

This method allows you to use multiple bait per catch, typically configurable to:

· 1 bait

· 3 bait

· 5 bait

With this method you can achieve:

· Around 168,000 GP per hour

· Roughly 13,000 Fishing XP per hour

The tradeoff is that this method requires more attention and is less AFK than traditional harpoon fishing.

Shark bait items can drop from monsters such as:

· Spiritual Griffin

· Aquanite

They can also be purchased from the Grand Exchange for around 113 GP each.

Rare Fishing Rewards

Fishing sharks also gives players a chance at two unique rewards.

Big Shark

There is a 1 in 5,000 chance of receiving a Big Shark.

· Counts as a collection log item

· Not tradable

· Can be stuffed and mounted in your player-owned house

This cosmetic reward is mostly a fun trophy for completionists.

Heron Pet

While fishing for sharks, players also have a chance to obtain the fishing skill pet, the Heron. The drop rate is approximately 1 in 82,000 catches. Although extremely rare, this pet is one of the most sought-after skilling companions in the game.

Final Thoughts

Fishing sharks in Old School RuneScape remains a reliable and relaxing activity. For players who enjoy laid-back skilling sessions, shark fishing at the Fishing Guild is one of the most comfortable ways to train Fishing while gradually building up a stockpile of valuable food.

If you are looking for a method that lets you multitask while playing, sharks remain one of the best long-standing options in the game.
