OSRS Amoxalotl (Ice Nagwa) Boss Guide 2025

Jul-25-2025 PST

This guide will walk you through everything you need to know to fight the Amoxalotl boss in OSRS. It's located in Varlamore and serves as the final boss in the Heart of Darkness quest. This is a great boss for practicing mechanics like movement and reactivating prayers. While it doesn't offer massive profits, it's an excellent stepping stone for learning bossing in the game.

We'll start by covering the requirements, then move on to gear and inventory, travel methods, mechanics, a full kill walkthrough, and finally, the loot you can expect from the boss.

Requirements

You must complete the Heart of Darkness quest to access this boss. It's the final fight in the quest, so if you're here, you're likely trying to finish it.

Combat-wise, it's recommended to have at least 60 Attack and Strength. Lower levels are technically possible, but having higher stats makes the fight easier and faster. You also need a minimum of 37 Prayer for Protect from Magic, although having 60 or 70 Prayer for Chivalry or Piety is much better for increasing your damage.

Defense isn't important since you can avoid all incoming damage if you execute the fight properly.

Recommended Gear

Amoxalotl is weak to crushing attacks. It also has a flat -2 armor value, meaning any accurate hit deals two additional damage. Weapons that hit twice will benefit even more from this mechanic.

For gear, wear your best melee equipment with an emphasis on crush bonus. Here are suggested options for each gear slot, from best to more accessible:

· Helmet: Slayer helm (on task), Inquisitor's helm, Torva helm, Blood Moon helm, Neitiznot faceguard, Neitiznot helm, Berserker helm.

· Cape: Infernal cape, Fire cape, Mythical cape, Ardougne cloak 4, Mixhide cape.

· Amulet: Rancor amulet, Amulet of torture, Amulet of fury, Amulet of glory, Amulet of strength.

· Ring: Ultra ring, Imbued berserker ring, Lightbearer (if using high-DPS spec weapons), Imbued tyrannical ring.

· Weapon: Scythe of Vitur (use slash unless wearing Inquisitor), dual Mahaals with Blood Moon gear, Abyssal bludgeon, Inquisitor's mace, Soulreaper axe, Zamorakian hasta, Glacial Tamatleys (dropped by the boss), Sarakus cudgel, Zombie axe.

· Shield (if not using 2H weapon): Avernic defender, Dragon defender, Dragonfire shield, Obsidian shield.

· Chest: Inquisitor's hauberk, Torva platebody, Blood Moon chestplate, Bandos chestplate, Fighter torso, Obsidian chest, Monk's robes or Proselyte.

· Legs: Inquisitor's legs, Torva platelegs, Blood Moon tacets, Bandos tacets, Obsidian legs, Proselyte or Monk's robes.

· Gloves: Ferocious gloves, Barrows gloves, or any gloves from Recipe for Disaster down to Mithril. Regen bracelet or Combat bracelet works too.

· Boots: Primordial boots, Dragon boots, Arclight boots, Spiked manacles, Mixhide boots, Rune boots.

Inventory Setup

You'll want a strong special attack weapon. Burning claws are great because they use only 30% special energy, allowing for frequent use. Dragon claws work too if you have them.

You should bring a rune pouch with blood, fire, and cosmic runes for thralls. You'll also need a Book of the Dead for summoning. Optionally, bring death and soul runes if you want to use Death Charge for more special attacks.

For travel, bring the Pendant of Atis if you've unlocked it. It allows teleportation close to the boss. If you haven't gotten it yet, you'll need to travel manually (explained below). House teleport tabs are helpful for healing and banking.

Other useful inventory items:

· Divine super combat potion

· 6 to 8 prayer potions

· A few pieces of high-healing food (Cooked Moonlight Antelope are ideal)

· Budget food like swordfish or lobster works for beginners

Traveling to the Boss

The Amoxalotl is found in the Twilight Temple inside the Ruins of Tapo Yaoic in the northeast corner of Varlamore.

You can build a Quetzal landing site nearby to make future travel easier. To build it, bring:

· 10 Quetzal feed

· 3 limestone bricks

· 4 soft clay

· A hammer and a saw

Use the Quetzal transport system from Fortis to Quz Cali Gorge, then run to the unbuilt landing site to the north. After building it, you can return via Quetzal from any other location.

The Pendant of Atis, which drops from Amoxalotl (1 in 25 chance) or Frost Nagwas (1 in 100), can teleport you to various statues across Varlamore. Once you unlock the Twilight Temple statue (located just east of the temple entrance), you'll be able to teleport directly there.

To start the fight, enter the lift at the Twilight Temple and go through the western door.

Boss Mechanics

The Amoxalotl uses only magic-based attacks. You should use Protect from Magic the entire time. Combine it with your strongest offensive melee prayer like Piety or Chivalry.

The boss's basic attack includes magic damage followed by spawning ice spikes around the room. These spikes appear quickly, giving you only a few ticks to dodge. After triggering, the tiles turn into permanent icy spots that deal damage every tick you stand on them.

Over time, the room fills with these dangerous tiles, forcing you to keep moving. If you step two or more tiles away, the boss will follow, which helps give you more space to fight.

Every four or five attacks, the boss uses a special. It alternates between two different special attacks:

1. Unstable Ice: Up to four pieces of unstable ice spawn near you. If you don't destroy them within two attacks, they explode into permanent icy spots and heal the boss. You can attack them without delay. Use your special weapon or even punch them if you want to conserve weapon charges.

2. Icicle Crash: The boss turns off your prayers and fires a magic attack. You must turn your Protect from Magic prayer back on before it hits. Use quick prayers to react quickly. You'll also get a chat message when your prayer is disabled.

Full Kill Walkthrough

Here's a step-by-step for a typical kill:

1. Enter the temple and walk through the western door.

2. Summon a thrall if using them.

3. Activate quick prayers (Protect from Magic + best melee prayer).

4. Start attacking the boss. Focus on dodging the ice spikes immediately after they spawn.

5. Move two or more tiles away when dodging to avoid creating icy zones near where you're standing.

6. When Unstable Ice appears, destroy each piece quickly.

7. When prayers are turned off (Icicle Crash), turn them back on before the hit lands.

8. Continue fighting, dodging, and reactivating prayers until the boss is dead.

You can leave and re-enter the room to make the boss respawn faster. This helps improve your kills per hour. However, for combat achievements that track kill time, it's better to stay inside the room to avoid delays from re-entering.

Loot and Profit

This boss is designed more for practice than OSRS gold profit, but there are some decent drops.

· Average loot per kill is about 13,500 GP.

· Kills per hour range from 20 to 60 depending on your skill and gear.

· That works out to 270,000 to 810,000 GP per hour in total loot.

· Subtracting supply costs, profit is usually 200k to 700k GP/hour.

Unique drops include:

· Frozen Tears (always dropped) – Used to charge the Pendant of Atis

· Pendant of Atis – 1 in 25 drop

· Glacial Tamatleys – 1 in 100 drop, solid dual-hit crush weapon

· Moxie Pet – 1 in 3,000 drop rate

Conclusion

The Amoxalotl is an entry-level boss with forgiving mechanics, making it a great learning tool for players new to PvM. The emphasis on movement and quick prayer reactivation helps you build skills useful for more advanced content. While the profit isn't amazing, it's not bad, and you can walk away with a few useful items like the teleport pendant or a new crush weapon.
