OSRS Bossing Guide: How to Start Bossing

Sep-05-2025 PST

Bossing is one of the most exciting and rewarding activities in Old School RuneScape (OSRS). Whether you're hunting for rare drops, chasing pets, or simply looking for a new challenge beyond skilling and Slayer, bossing offers some of the best content in the game.

But if you're new to PvM (Player vs. Monster combat), it can feel overwhelming. What gear do you need? What bosses should you start with? How do you even get better at it?

This guide will walk you through how to get started with bossing in OSRS, focusing less on specific mechanics and more on general preparation, mindset, and tips that will make your early attempts more enjoyable and successful.

Step 1: Preparing for Bossing

Train Your Stats

It might sound boring, but the most important thing you can do before bossing is to raise your combat stats.

· Attack & Strength / Ranged / Magic: Higher levels mean faster kills and fewer mistakes.

· Defense & Magic: A higher defense level reduces incoming damage, while magic boosts your mage's defense significantly. Both keep you alive longer, saving food and supplies.

In other words: high stats > fancy gear. Gear helps, but stats are the foundation.

Gear and Supplies

You don't need maxed gear to get started. In fact, most players earn their upgrades by bossing. Starting with budget setups is smart:

· Cheaper gear = cheaper death costs. When you die (and you will at first), reclaiming budget items costs far less.

· Food first. Bring high-healing food like sharks or manta rays. Each bite restores more HP per slot, letting you stay in the fight longer.

· Potions matter. Ranging, Super Combat, or Divine potions boost your DPS significantly. Stay potted up for faster kills.

· Keep it simple. At first, don't overload yourself with gear switches or advanced items like thralls. Focus on staying alive and learning mechanics.

Organize Your Setup

When learning a boss, setting up can feel slow and stressful. To speed it up:

· Take screenshots of your inventory.

· Use bank tags or the Inventory Setup plugin on RuneLite.

This lets you re-gear quickly after each death and minimizes downtime between attempts.

Step 2: Mental Preparation

Bossing isn't just about stats—it's about mindset.

· Expect to die. Dying is normal when learning. Even pros with thousands of kill count (KC) went through dozens of deaths first.

· Don't panic. Eating at the wrong times, forgetting prayers, or stressing over low DPS are common mistakes. Stay calm, focus on survival, and the kills will come.

· Take breaks. If you're frustrated, step away. Bossing should be fun, not stressful.

Step 3: During the Fight

Focus on the Boss, Not Your DPS

Your goal isn't to stare at your hits—it's to watch the boss.

· Learn the attack patterns.

· Recognize timing between hits.

· Pay attention to prayer flicks and overhead switches.

Checking your DPS is pointless if you're not dodging mechanics.

Eating and Healing

· Early on: Keep your health high to avoid sudden deaths.

· Later on: Learn to eat only when necessary (ideally between attacks).

· Don't waste food. If a shark heals 20, wait until you're missing at least that much.

Stay Potted

Offensive potions make a huge difference:

· Example: 75 Attack + Strength → 91 with pots.

That boost means faster kills, less damage taken, and more chances at loot.

Step 4: Building Experience

The fastest way to improve is simply to just do it.

· Start small. Fight entry-level bosses like Obor, Bryophyta, or Barrows. Then move to mid-tier bosses like Giant Mole, Scorpia, or Dagannoth Kings.

· Use them as practice. Even low-level bosses help you learn prayer flicks, eating habits, and positioning.

· Apply those skills later. What you practice on Scorpia (overhead prayers, movement) will help when you step into Nightmare or Theatre of Blood.

Step 5: The Bossing Loop

Every boss fight follows the same core cycle:

1. Gear up at the bank.

2. Grab supplies (OSRS gold, food, pots, teleports).

3. Travel to the boss.

4. Pot up & pray up.

5. Fight the boss.

  · If you die → reclaim items, reset, try again.

  · If you win → loot, reset, and go again.

Over time, this process becomes second nature.

Final Thoughts

The most important advice for new bosses is simple: just start. Don't wait until you have max gear or perfect stats. Don't worry about dying. Every attempt teaches you something, and every boss becomes easier with practice.

At first, your kills will be slow, messy, and stressful. Later, they'll be efficient, profitable, and almost routine. That journey is what makes bossing one of the most rewarding parts of OSRS.

So grab your food, sip your potions, say a quick prayer—and get in there. The best way to get good at bossing is to do it.
