OSRS Duke Sucellus Guide for 2025
Aug-22-2025 PSTThis guide is designed to give you everything you need to start efficiently killing Duke Succellus. With recent changes to the boss mechanics, I've updated this guide to help you prepare the right gear, understand the fight mechanics, and optimize your kills. Plus, there's a full demo kill walkthrough so you can see everything in action.
Gear Setup: Minimum Viable & Upgrades
Like most bosses, maximizing melee strength boosts your damage output. However, I'll start with the minimum viable gear you need and then suggest upgrades if you have better options.
Weapon
· Abyssal Whip — Your best OSRS gold budget choice.
· Why whip? It has a four-tick attack speed, which is important for managing attack timings later in the fight.
· If you have better gear, feel free to upgrade, but for learning, stick to four ticks.
Armor & Accessories
· Helm of Neitiznot
· Full Obsidian armor set
· Amulet of Glory
· Dragon Boots
· Best Recipe for Disaster gloves you have
· Blessig (any type)
· Obsidian Cape
· Dragon Defender
Note: I'm skipping the ring slot here because the best rings are expensive and don't add much value to this fight.
I like wearing a Light Bearer to boost special attack energy because more specs mean more fun. Bringing a spec weapon like a Dragon Dagger (p++) or Bandos Godsword (BGS) is worth it—especially for the defense reduction from the BGS.
Inventory Setup
You'll need:
· Pickaxe and Pestle & Mortar (for potion crafting during prep)
· Teleportation items to get in and out quickly
· Prayer potions (amount depends on your prayer usage)
· Food (sharks recommended)
· Super combat potions
The exact potion/food ratio varies based on your stats, gear, and skill level, but my on-screen setup is a solid starting point.
Getting to Duke Succellus
· The fastest way is using the Ring of Shadows teleport (unlocked via a teleport tablet from the Duke).
· If you don't have that, use Icy Basalt to run through the shortcuts and descend to the Gorok Prison, where Duke resides.
Prep Phase: Awakening Duke
Before you can fight Duke, you have to wake him by feeding him potions crafted from ingredients around the arena. Here's how:
Step 1: Mine Mushrooms
· Avoid the laser eyes and shadows on the floor by timing your runs.
· Wait for the far south laser eye to fire, then sprint across, avoiding shadows.
· Mine 8 mushrooms on the north wall.
· On the return, wait for the far north laser eye then cross again, collecting another 8 mushrooms.
· Shadows deal damage and stun, so avoid them by running diagonally or timing your movement precisely.
Step 2: Grind Mushrooms
Use your pestle and water to grind the mushrooms.
Step 3: Mine Salt
· In the central area, mine 72 sailac salt (minimum for one batch of potions).
· Avoid gas vents that explode on the floor — wait until they stop before moving.
Step 4: Craft Potions
· Use the vats at the back of the arena to mix ingredients and create potions.
· Six potions are needed to feed Duke and start the fight.
Fight Mechanics Overview
· Stay on the row of tiles closest to Duke to avoid his magic blast (protect from melee on).
· Step away whenever Duke tries a melee attack—spikes will appear on the floor. Step back or behind pillars to avoid.
· The fight is rhythmic: attack, step out, attack, step out, repeat.
Key Mechanics to Watch For
· After every five ground slams, Duke does an instakill ice barrage—stay behind a pillar until the attack finishes.
· Watch for gas vents on the floor; run to the other pillar when they start spurting gas.
· When Duke's HP gets low, his attack speed increases. This is why a four-tick weapon is crucial — slower weapons make it tough to fit in all attacks.
Demo Kill Highlights
· Start with four sharks in inventory (don't eat them prematurely!).
· Run across the arena, avoiding shadows and laser eyes to gather mushrooms, then grind them.
· Mine the salt while avoiding gas vents, and craft your potions.
· Feed Duke six potions to awaken him.
· Use your prayer, potions, and special attacks to fight.
· Dodge attacks rhythmically, stepping out at melee hits and hiding behind pillars for ice barrage.
· Exploit small windows to squeeze in extra hits right after eye laser attacks and while running between pillars during gas attacks.
· When Duke speeds up, your four-tick weapon allows you to maintain your attack rhythm.
