OSRS Duo Yama Guide - Gear, Strategy, and Tips

May-15-2025 PST

If you're getting into bossing in OSRS and want something new, challenging, and rewarding, Yama is a fantastic option. Especially with a friend, duo Yama becomes one of the most efficient methods to rack up kills and grind out loot. In this guide, we'll cover how to approach Duo Yama, recommended gear including both high-end and budget setups, how the Soulflame Horn works, how to properly use mechanics like glyphs and the judge phase, and everything else you need to know to master this boss.

Introduction: What is Yama?

Yama is a high-level boss in OSRS located in the Chasm of Fire. It's designed with both solo and duo content in mind, but running it with a friend brings a major advantage, mainly thanks to the Soulflame Horn, which only works in duo encounters. While Yama can be daunting at first, with the right strategy and understanding of its mechanics, the boss becomes a fast and consistent source of loot.

The Soulflame Horn – Duo-Only DPS Powerhouse

The Soulflame Horn is the most critical tool for duo Yama fights. Currently sitting at around 50 million OSRS Gold, it's reasonably affordable considering how much value it brings. The horn costs 25% special attack energy and guarantees that both you and your partner hit your next melee attack. This opens the door to using otherwise inaccurate but high-damage weapons like the Elder Maul.

One horn spec sets your partner up perfectly for a defense-draining hit with an Elder Maul, which reduces Yama's defenses and opens up better DPS across the fight. With both players using horns effectively, your melee DPS goes through the roof. Horns work well with Emberlight, and using them back and forth is currently the best possible DPS rotation.

Note: Horn only works with single-hit melee weapons. Scythe of Vitur and other multi-hit weapons won't benefit from the guaranteed hit. Abby Dagger is an exception, as its hits are calculated differently, and it does work well with the horn.

Best-in-Slot (High-End) Gear Setup

For those with access to top-tier equipment, the optimal setup for Duo Yama looks like this:

· Helmet: Torva Helmet

· Body & Legs: Oath Plate (top and bottom). These are currently the best melee gear pieces for the fight. They offer around 1.3% better performance than Torva.

· Main Weapon: Elder Maul (for the initial hit with the horn), Emberlight (for regular melee DPS)

· Magic Weapon: Tumeken's Shadow or Purging Staff. Either works; Shadow is slightly better for phase 3, but not by much. Purging Staff is vital for one-shots.

· Cape: Infernal Cape or Fire Max Cape

· Boots: Primordial Boots

· Gloves: Ferocious Gloves

· Amulet: Amulet of Torture or Occult Necklace (depending on role)

· Ring: Berserker Ring (i) or Seer's Ring (i)

· Shield: Arcane Spirit Shield (for magic phases)

· Spec Weapon: Soulflame Horn

You'll also want a rune pouch with Aether runes for access to Thraws, Word of Archus, Death Charge, and Mark of Darkness.

Budget Duo Setup

For players without max cash or BIS gear, you can still perform well in duo Yama with this mid-level setup:

· Helmet: Neitiznot Faceguard

· Body: Bandos Chestplate

· Legs: Bandos Tassets

· Boots: Dragon Boots or Primordials

· Cape: OSRS FireCape or Ardougne Cloak

· Amulet: Amulet of Torture (or Fury if on a tighter budget)

· Ring: Berserker Ring or Warrior Ring

· Main Weapon: Emberlight

· Magic Weapon: Purging Staff (crucial even in budget setups)

· Special Attack Weapon: Soulflame Horn, if you can afford it

· Offhand: Mage's Book or Arcane Spirit Shield

You don't need every item on this list, but the most important thing is ensuring you bring a Purging Staff. It one-shots the orbs and drastically improves kill consistency. If you only have one Synin weapon, prioritize crafting the Purging Staff over anything else.

Getting to Yama – Travel Methods

The easiest way to reach Yama is by using the Fairy Ring DJR to get into the Chasm of Fire. From there, follow the path to the Yama boss area.

Alternatively, you can use the chain shortcut if it's unlocked, which drops you much closer to the boss, saving several seconds per trip.

Pre-Kill Setup & Spec Usage

Before starting the kill, both players should coordinate positioning and their spec order. Here's what to do:

1. One player stands next to the boss and uses the Soulflame Horn.

2. The other player stands one tile away, uses the Elder Maul immediately after being horned.

3. This Elder Maul hit is guaranteed to land and applies the full defense drain, making the rest of the fight smoother.

From there, alternate horn usage and stick with Emberlight or your melee weapon of choice.

Understanding Yama's Mechanics

Tanking

At the start of each kill, Yama randomly selects a tank. The tank should use Protect from Melee, while the DPS uses Protect from Magic unless otherwise needed. The tank takes the brunt of the damage and should ideally bring slightly higher defensive gear or additional food.

Glyph Mechanics

Yama has several phases with different glyph-based mechanics:

· Orbs: Orbs appear and must be killed quickly. With a Purging Staff, one-shotting them is easy. If you're not fast enough, you can nullify the attack by touching the matching glyph.

· Fire Glyphs: When a fiery glyph appears, run to it and touch it. This blocks the incoming special.

· Void Glyphs: These cause damage if you fail to nullify. Use the glyph to avoid the damage if you're not confident in killing the orb in time.

The Judge Phase

During the Judge mechanic, both players must alternate between magic and melee. The phase has a shared health pool, and both styles are needed to proceed. Coordinate and swap styles quickly to burn through this mechanic.

Phase Progression and Enrage

Yama phases at 33% and 66% HP. The final phase includes enrage, which increases the boss's speed and damage.

In the enraged phase:

· Be careful of orbs—each melee hit spawns one.

· Always stand perpendicular to meteor attacks.

· Yama will alternate between range and magic attacks, so prayer flicking becomes essential.

This is the hardest part of the fight, so it's where good gear and coordination pay off. If you're using Purging Staff or Shadow here, you'll be much more efficient.

Additional Tips

· Multisplat weapons like Scythe don't work with the Soulflame Horn. Stick to single-hit weapons like Elder Maul or Emberlight.

· Use the Party plugin on RuneLite to see when your teammate lands specs.

· You only need three successful Emberlight specs to get a full defense drain. After that, keep using your best DPS method.

· Bring at least two restores, though three is safer, depending on how long your kills take.

· Watch for who the tank is at the start. That person should focus on survival while the DPS maximizes damage.

Summary

Duo Yama is one of the most enjoyable and rewarding pieces of content in OSRS right now. The introduction of the Soulflame Horn and Emberlight has completely shifted how this boss is approached, especially in team scenarios.

If you're equipped with good gear and solid communication, you can get 2–3 minute kills reliably. Even in budget setups, success is achievable with proper strategy and good use of mechanics like the horn, glyphs, and phase transitions.

Whether you're farming for shards, looking for a bossing duo activity, or just want to get consistent kills with a friend, duo Yama is worth learning. Bring your horn, swap your styles, and don't forget—pre-horn before the Elder Maul drop. Good luck, and may your drops be plentiful.
