OSRS Early Game Bossing Obor Guide: The Hill Giant Boss
Oct-20-2025 PSTIf you're new to Old School RuneScape or starting fresh on an Ironman, early-game bossing can feel intimidating. Most bosses require high stats, long quest unlocks, or expensive gear setups. But hidden beneath the surface of Edgeville lies a beginner-friendly boss that's often overlooked: Obor, the Hill Giant Boss.
Obor is an excellent introduction to bossing mechanics, especially for Ironmen who need to generate supplies and GP without relying on the Grand Exchange. He's also a nostalgic, quirky boss with a surprisingly useful drop table—plus the chance at his unique signature weapon, the Hill Giant Club.
In this guide, we'll cover how to find and fight Obor, his requirements, loot, and whether farming him is worth your time.
Requirements to Fight Obor
One of the best things about Obor is that there are no formal requirements—no quests or skill unlocks are needed to challenge him. However, there are some recommendations before you take him on:
· Combat Stats: At least 40+ Attack, Strength, and Defence for melee, or similar levels in Magic if taking the mage route.
· Prayer: Protect from Missiles is very helpful for reducing damage.
· Food: Lobsters or better are recommended.
· Teleportation: A Ring of Dueling for quick banking and stat restores at Ferox Enclave is ideal.
How to Get to Obor
1. Start in Edgeville. Enter the dungeon via the trapdoor in the building just east of the Yew trees.
2. Get the Brass Key. This key allows you to access a shortcut to the Hill Giant area from Varrock's west bank, saving a lot of travel time.
3. Hill Giants and Keys. To fight Obor, you need a Giant Key, which drops from Hill Giants (about 1/16 chance).
Once you have a key, head to the back of the Hill Giant arena and open the gate to face Obor.
Fighting Obor
Melee Strategy (Recommended for Beginners)
· Enter with Protect from Missiles active.
· Activate Strength and Attack prayers if possible.
· Stand your ground and brute force him with melee.
· Watch out: Obor has a knockback melee attack that can push you across the room.
Mage Strategy
· Use Entangle or Snare to freeze him.
· Cast your strongest combat spell while keeping distance.
· If he gets close, re-freeze and reposition.
· This method is safer but requires more focus.
Loot from Obor
Obor himself doesn't drop much since his rework—the average kill is only about 248 coins plus Giant Bones. The real rewards come from the Chest inside the arena, which requires another Giant Key.
Obor's Drops
· Giant Bones (always)
· Giant Key (1/16 drop rate) – the key to farming profit
· Herbs, seeds, and minor rune/iron gear
· Coins and gems
Obor's Chest Loot (the good stuff)
· Rune items (great for high alching)
· High rune quantities for training Magic or cashing in
· Hill Giant Club (unique drop, rare, valuable)
· Average chest value: ~24,000 GP per key
Profit Potential
From one hour of farming Obor:
· 48 kills yielded about 1.09M GP/hour.
· However, the profit depends heavily on keys. The kills alone aren't rewarding—the chest is where the real value lies.
· Each key averages ~45k OSRS Gold in value.
In short: Obor is profitable if you can consistently farm keys.
Why Fight Obor?
· Perfect for Ironmen: Early access to rune gear and runes without quests or GE.
· Beginner-Friendly: Simple mechanics, easy access, and low requirements.
· Unique Drop: The Hill Giant Club is a fun flex item, though not BIS.
· Early Bossing Practice: A good stepping stone before progressing to Barrows, Slayer bosses, or stronger content.
Final Thoughts
Obor might not be the flashiest boss in OSRS, but he's a fantastic introduction to bossing, especially for Ironmen and new accounts. While his individual drops are underwhelming, his chest rewards make him worth farming if you can collect enough Giant Keys.
So, next time you're wandering through Edgeville or training on Hill Giants, don't overlook Obor. He's more than just a big hill giant—he's your first real step into the world of bossing in Old School RuneScape.
