OSRS Game Jam Update: Massive Quality of Life Changes for Charged Weapons

Mar-06-2025 PST

This week, Jagex has dropped an incredible quality of life update for all charged weapons in Old School RS, a change that has been long-awaited by the community.

From your Tumeken's Shadow to your Tridents, Blowpipes, Sanguinesti Staff, and even your Bow of Faerdhinen (Bofa), any weapon requiring runes, shards, or other resources to maintain its charges has now been significantly improved. Gone are the days of withdrawing an uncharged weapon mid-raid and realizing it too late. This update ensures that players can automate their charge management, making gameplay smoother and less frustrating.

In this article, we will break down exactly how this update works, how to set it up, and why this is one of the best quality of life improvements Jagex has introduced in recent years. Strap in, boys—let's dive right into it!

The Game Jam Charge Update: A Breakdown

The update brings two major changes regarding charge management in OSRS:

1. Corrupting the Bow of Faerdhinen and Quiver Improvements

Previously, corrupting your Bofa required a hefty upfront investment of 2,000 crystal shards. Players had to grind and stockpile shards before they could make use of their weapon to its full potential. However, with the new system, the Bofa and the Coliseum Quiver now operate on an incremental corruption mechanic similar to how the Ancient Sceptre upgrades.

How it works:

Instead of requiring all shards upfront, you can now progressively corrupt the Bofa by simply using it.

• For every 10,000 charges spent using the weapon, it will automatically progress toward full corruption.

• This means that after using 200,000 charges, your Bofa will be fully corrupted, eliminating the need to pre-farm shards.

This change allows for a more natural and fluid progression, ensuring that players are rewarded simply for using their weapon rather than grinding excessive resources beforehand.

2. Automatic Charge Management in the Bank

The most impactful change, however, is the introduction of a configurable charge management system within the bank. No more entering Theatre of Blood only to realize your Sanguinesti Staff is out of blood runes!

How to Enable the Feature:

1. Open your bank interface.

2. Enable the 'Bank Item Options' setting.

    • This option must be turned on for charge configuration to be visible.

3. Right-click your charged weapon and select 'Configure Charges'.

4. Set your preferred charge amount.

    • For example, if you want your Trident to always have 2,000 charges, enter that amount.

5. Now, every time you withdraw your weapon from the bank, it will automatically pull the necessary resources from your bank to reach the desired charge level.

This means you'll never again enter a boss fight or PvM encounter with an undercharged weapon. Your bank will handle all charge replenishments for you as long as you have the necessary resources stored.

Why This Update is a Game-Changer

This quality of life improvement is one of the best updates Jagex has released in a long time. Here's why it's such a big deal:

1. Prevents Wasted PvM Runs

Every OSRS player has, at some point, entered a raid, Slayer task, or PvM encounter only to realize that their weapon is out of charges. With this update, you'll never have to make an embarrassing mid-run bank trip again.

2. Saves Time and Resources

Instead of manually recharging weapons before each use, the bank now does it for you. This means less downtime and more focus on gameplay.

3. Streamlines Resource Management

With automatic withdrawals from the bank, you won't need to micromanage runes, scales, or other charge-related resources manually. As long as you have them stored, your weapons will always be battle-ready.

4. Encourages More Fluid Gameplay

This change is particularly beneficial for high-level PvMers, who frequently use charged weapons in Theatre of Blood, Tombs of Amascut, and other endgame content. The ability to instantly withdraw a fully charged weapon means players can focus more on strategy rather than tedious prep work.

Are There Any Drawbacks?

While this update is overwhelmingly positive, there are a few minor things to be aware of:

• Weapons that require external charging methods (like the Scythe of Vitur) do not currently benefit from this feature.

   • The Scythe, which requires vials of blood, still needs to be charged manually.

• If you don't have enough resources in your bank, the weapon will be withdrawn with whatever charges are available.

   • This means you still need to ensure you have a stockpile of runes, scales, or shards.

• Global Charge Settings (Use With Caution!)

   • Jagex has introduced a ‘Global Charge Reward Threshold' setting, but this applies to all items, whether you own them or not.

   • Items like Crystal Armor won't let you reclaim spent charges, meaning that global settings could lead to wasted OSRS gold resources. Use it at your own risk!

Final Thoughts

Jagex has delivered one of the most impactful quality of life changes in recent memory, addressing a long-standing frustration for players who rely on charged weapons. The ability to configure auto-charging in the bank is a simple yet game-changing feature that will benefit everyone from casual players to high-end PvMers.
