OSRS Guardians of the Rift Guide for Beginners

May-06-2025 PST

Guardians of the Rift is one of the most popular and rewarding minigames for training Runecrafting in OSRS. It can be a little confusing the first time you show up, especially if you're not sure what to bring or what to do. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know to get started, from requirements and gear to how to play effectively and earn maximum points.

Requirements to Access the Minigame

Before you can play Guardians of the Rift, you'll need to complete a few quests:

1. Rune Mysteries – This is the starting quest for all Runecrafting.

2. Enter the Abyss – This gives you access to the Abyss and requires completion of Rune Mysteries. It will also get you to level 9 Runecrafting.

3. Temple of the Eye – This is the quest that unlocks the minigame itself. You need level 10 Runecrafting to begin it, but you can get from level 9 to 10 by crafting a single inventory of water runes. After completing Temple of the Eye, you'll be boosted to 27 Runecrafting.

Additional Altar Unlocks

During the minigame, various portals to Runecrafting altars will open. Some of these portals require certain quests or skill levels to access. It's highly recommended to unlock these extra altars over time since they can improve your XP rates and points, but they aren't strictly necessary for playing the minigame.

Recommended Gear and Items

The bare minimum you need is your best pickaxe. However, several other items make the minigame more efficient:

• Essence pouches: If you don't have any yet, you'll receive them as rewards from the minigame. They do degrade over time, and if left unfixed, they'll eventually disintegrate.

• To repair pouches, you can either use the NPC Contact spell on the Lunar spellbook to speak with the Dark Mage or visit him directly in the Abyss.

• You can also unlock a pouch repair service in the minigame by giving 25 abyssal pearls to Apprentice Cordelia. After that, each repair costs just one pearl.

• Graceful outfit: Useful for conserving running energy, especially helpful since you'll be running a lot.

• 56 Agility: Grants access to the better essence mine on the east side of the map, increasing the amount of essence you gather.

• Mining gear: Any bonuses to mining will help. This includes the Varrock platebody, Celestial ring charged with stardust, and even the Mining skillcape if you have it. All bonuses stack together.

• Lunar spellbook and 82 Magic: This unlocks the Magic Imbue spell for making combination runes, which increases your elemental points and XP. You'll also be able to use NPC Contact for quick pouch repairs.

• Binding necklaces: Required for making combination runes with Magic Imbue. They hold 16 charges each, and you'll go through a few hundred of them if you plan to train to 99 Runecrafting here.

• Rune pouch: This frees up inventory space. Keep air runes in your inventory, and use rune pouch presets for better organization. It's helpful to set rune amounts to around 1,000 per stack.

A few helpful plugins include the Item Charges plugin (to track binding necklace charges) and the Guardians of the Rift Helper by Bofa Bear, available in the Plugin Hub.

How to Get to Guardians of the Rift

Use the Grouping menu in-game and teleport to Guardians of the Rift. If your minigame teleport is on cooldown, you can also enter through the portal in the basement of the Wizard's Tower.

Once inside, it's best to join one of the Mass Worlds, which are listed in the world switcher. Jagex has buffed XP rates for mass games, making them more consistent and beginner-friendly.

You can also turn off public chat and enable the Entity Hider plugin to reduce visual clutter, similar to how players handle Wintertodt.

How the Minigame Works

The main objective is to help charge the giant guardian in the center to 100% energy. If successful, you win the game and receive a large XP drop and your reward points. If the guardian is destroyed by abyssal creatures (when energy hits 0%), the game fails.

Starting the Game

When you join, there might already be a game in progress. That's fine – use the time to look around and get familiar with the layout.

At the start of a new round:

1. Grab a stack of uncharged cells and a weak cell from the table.

2. Use the weak cell on one of the empty barrier spots. If they're already filled, charge a cell for future use.

3. Run to a guardian remains area to start mining guardian fragments. If you have 56 Agility, head east down the slope for faster mining. If not, mine is near the workbench by the entrance.

When the 2-minute timer appears, start mining. Once the timer gets to the 30-second mark, stop mining and head to the workbench.

1. Use the workbench to turn your fragments into essence.

2. Fill your inventory and pouches with essence, then head to the central guardian.

3. Two altars will open – one elemental (like air, fire) and one catalytic (like law, nature).

4. Enter a portal, runecraft the essence, and get energy stones.

5. Exit the altar, click the guardian in the middle to offer the energy stones, which increases his energy and gives you XP and points.

If you have a charged cell, you can also:

• Use it to reinforce or upgrade the barriers.

• Use it with a chisel to create a guardian that fights off abyssal creatures. In mass worlds, this is usually already covered by other players, but helping still gives you extra XP and points.

Yellow Portals and Essence Extraction

During each game, yellow orb-shaped portals will appear with a notification and a countdown timer. Enter these whenever possible. Inside, you can mine pure essence directly without needing to process fragments. These portals spawn every 2 minutes, so once you get the rhythm of a match, you'll learn how many runs you can fit in between each portal appearance.

Talismans and Overcharged Cells

Sometimes, while crafting runes, you'll receive talismans. These are one-time-use items that let you re-enter a specific altar even if the portal is closed. This is useful for overcharged cells, which give more XP.

If you want to avoid receiving certain talismans, right-click the portal entrance and disable low-level altars. This is entirely optional.

Over time, you'll collect a variety of runes. You can either drop them or deposit them into your bank using the deposit pool near the workbench.

Max Points Method (Magic Imbue + Binding Necklaces)

For players using the Lunar spellbook and aiming for maximum points:

• Use Magic Imbue before crafting runes at the elemental altar.

• Use air runes on the altar to make combination runes, such as smoke or mud runes.

• You'll receive polyelemental energy stones instead of regular ones. These give 1.5x more points and XP.

• Make sure you're wearing a binding necklace. Each necklace has 16 charges and gets used every time you successfully craft combination runes.

This method dramatically increases your rewards per game and is the most efficient way to farm points.

Final Thoughts

Guardians of the Rift might seem overwhelming in the first few rounds, but once you get used to the flow, it becomes one of the most rewarding ways to train Runecrafting. It combines gameplay, strategy, and solid rewards while offering good XP and fun team-based content. You'll also unlock unique cosmetics, abyssal pearls, and useful Runecrafting gear like the Raiments of the Eye and the Guardian's Eye as you go.

Stick with it, get used to the portal timings, use the yellow essence portal efficiently, and if possible, unlock Magic Imbue for the maximum XP and points.

Once you get the hang of it, you'll see why so many players choose Guardians of the Rift all the way to level 99 Runecrafting.
