OSRS Guide: Is Zulrah Worth Killing In 2024

May-22-2024 PST

Today, we’re going to be taking on Zulrah, one of the most classic and lucrative bosses in Old School RS (OSRS). Often referred to as the "money snake," Zulrah has earned its nickname due to its potential for significant profit. While Zulrah can be challenging to master, once you do, it becomes a highly rewarding boss to camp.

I’m running low on Zulrah scales, which are essential for the Chambers of Xeric, so today’s goal is to restock. To get back into the rhythm, I did a few practice kills. While I’m not as proficient as I was during my peak farming days, Zulrah is a boss that you can quickly get the hang of again with a bit of practice. Today, we’ll see if Zulrah is still worth killing in 2024 and how much money we can make per hour. I might even extend the session to a couple of hours to ensure we get a substantial amount of scales.

Gear and Inventory Setup

For this Zulrah run, I’m using a hybrid setup, focusing on both magic and range. Here’s a breakdown of my OSRS items gear:

Magic Gear:

    • Helmet: Tanzanite Helm (or Serpentine Helm for venom protection)

    • Necklace: Occult Necklace

    • Body: Ahrim's Robe Top

    • Weapon: Trident of the Swamp

    • Shield: Mage's Book or Ward of Arceuus

    • Boots: Eternal Boots

    • Ring: Ring of Suffering (to deal with Snakelings)

Range Gear:

    • Helmet: Tanzanite Helm (for venom protection)

    • Necklace: Necklace of Anguish

    • Body: Karil's Leathertop (for the defensive bonus)

    • Weapon: Toxic Blowpipe

    • Cape: Ava's Assembler

    • Gloves: Barrows Gloves

Inventory:

    • Ranging Potion

    • One to two Prayer Potions

    • Sharks and Karambwans for combo food

    • Zulrah Teleports or Fairy Ring codes (BJS for "Big Juicy Snake")

    • Construction Cape for easy house teleports

Getting to Zulrah

To reach Zulrah, use a Zulrah teleport if you have one. Alternatively, use the Fairy Ring code BJS, which stands for "Big Juicy Snake," and cross the stepping stones, requiring 76 Agility.

Learning Zulrah

When learning Zulrah, many guides can be confusing. The best approach for me was simply diving in and learning through experience. The fight involves switching between magic and range gear and changing prayers accordingly. Each phase requires different tactics, but the variety keeps the fight interesting.

Make sure your Ring of Recoil or Ring of Suffering is charged and enabled. These rings help manage the Snakelings, reducing the overall damage taken.

Killing Zulrah

Start the fight by drinking a Ranging Potion and heading in with quick prayers. Position yourself strategically and switch gear based on Zulrah’s current form. Here's a basic outline of the fight:

    • Blue Phase (Magic): Use range gear and protect from magic.

    • Green Phase (Range): Use magic gear and protect from range.

    • Red Phase (Melee): Use magic and stand far back to avoid melee attacks.

Zulrah's phases will vary, so adapt accordingly. The fight tests your gear switching and prayer flicking skills, making it a dynamic and engaging boss.

Tracking Loot and Efficiency

After a few kills, I noticed varying profits. A kill yielding 55k GP wasn’t impressive, but another at 133k GP showed the potential. Over an hour, I aimed to track the loot to determine Zulrah’s profitability in 2024.

Hour One Results:

    • Kills: 24

    • Total Loot: 2.29 million GP

    • Supplies Used: About 1,000 Zulrah scales for gear charges (Helm, Blowpipe, Trident)

    • Net Profit: Approximately 1.3-1.5 million GP (after supply costs)

Hour Two Results:

    • Kills: 19 (due to deaths and slower kills)

    • Total Loot: 1.51 million GP

    • Net Profit: Around 900k-1 million GP

Over two hours, I achieved 43 kills, totaling 3.8 million GP in loot. Considering the supply costs, Zulrah still yields a respectable profit of around 1.5 to 2 million GP per hour. While not the best moneymaker in the game, it remains viable, especially with the chance of unique drops like the Tanzanite Fang or Magic Fang, which can significantly boost your profits.

Zulrah is more than just a Runescape gold farm; it provides valuable resources like herbs, ores, and antidotes, making it particularly beneficial for Ironman accounts. The dynamic fight mechanics keep it engaging, ensuring it doesn’t become monotonous.

In conclusion, Zulrah is still worth killing in 2024. With the right setup and some practice, you can efficiently farm Zulrah for scale and profit. Whether you’re an experienced player or someone looking to revisit this iconic boss, Zulrah offers a rewarding challenge with substantial rewards.
