OSRS King Black Dragon Guide in 2025
Apr-30-2025 PSTWelcome to this King Black Dragon (KBD) guide for OSRS in 2025. The King Black Dragon is one of the oldest bosses in the game. Despite being relatively easy by today's standards, it's still a decent boss for mid-level players or anyone on a Black Dragon Slayer task.
What You Need to Fight KBD
To fight the KBD effectively, you need three types of protection:
1. Dragonfire protection
2. Anti-poison
3. Prayer protection (usually Protect from Magic or Melee)
The KBD uses three attacks:
• Standard dragonfire
• Special dragonfire that has one of three effects: it can poison you, freeze you for six seconds, or drain all your stats by 2
• Melee attack
Special dragonfire is the main thing to watch out for. It activates at random intervals and can combo with standard damage if you're not prepared.
There are combinations of gear and potions that reduce the damage. The best dragonfire protection comes from using an anti-dragon shield and an anti-fire potion. If you're using a two-handed weapon like the Twisted Bow and can't wear an anti-dragon shield, you can use a super anti-fire potion combined with Protect from Magic for good, but not perfect, protection.
If you can't use anti-fire potions at all, the anti-dragon shield by itself will still reduce some damage, but not as much.
One useful trick is to stand in melee distance with Protect from Melee on, even when using Ranged. This limits the KBD's special dragonfire usage to about 33% of the time. If you're standing far away (like with Twisted Bow), it will use special dragonfire about 50% of the time instead.
Location and Wilderness Risk
The King Black Dragon's lair is not technically in the Wilderness, but the path to get there runs through level 40+ Wilderness, so there's a strong risk of getting PKed. Teleport spots are common hotspots for PKers.
The lair itself is in a multi-combat zone, so you can bring friends if you want to duo or trio the boss. Cannons are allowed, but bringing one is risky since getting PKed on the way in can result in a big loss.
KBD can be killed on a Black Dragon Slayer task for the Slayer Helmet bonus. However, you cannot do this if Cristilia assigns the task, as that would require Wilderness-specific kills.
If you get crashed a lot, or just want some peace, you can pay 50,000 OSRS gold coins to enter an instanced version of the fight. Right-click the lever outside the boss room and select "Private." The coins are pulled straight from your bank. In an instance, your drops will stay on the ground for 30 minutes instead of the normal 2, but you can't use a looting bag to deposit your items while in instance mode.
Before heading in, make sure to withdraw anti-poison and set up your RuneLite settings.
Gear Setups
Here are three example gear setups based on how much protection you want:
1. Maximum Protection (Melee or Ranged with Shield)
o One-handed weapon
o Anti-dragon shield
o Anti-fire potion
o Protect from Melee
o Stand in melee distance
This setup provides the most overall safety.
2. Two-handed Weapon Setup (e.g., Twisted Bow)
o Two-handed weapon
o Super anti-fire potion
o Protect from Magic
o Stand out of melee distance
This gives solid protection but allows KBD to use its special dragonfire more often.
3. Low Protection Setup (No Anti-Fire Potion)
o One-handed weapon
o Anti-dragon shield
o No anti-fire potion
o Less protection overall
Only use this if you're limited on supplies.
All setups should focus on three main valuable gear items and then use welfare for the rest. Most gear setups risk under 50,000 coins, and even with supplies, it's rarely over 200,000 GP per trip.
Why Ranged Is the Meta in 2025
Currently, Ranged is the best option for KBD, especially because affordable ranged gear now has very high accuracy. Twisted Bow is still excellent for high-end setups, but even with budget gear, Ranged gives fast and reliable kills.
Bring no more than 200 arrows or bolts to avoid unnecessary risk.
If you're going with Melee, it's a bit less efficient but still viable. Like with Ranged, pick your top three valuables and keep the rest cheap. You can check the NOBS OSRS calculator for exact gear suggestions, including DPS numbers, resource usage, and estimated kill times. It's a great tool to test different setups.
Fast Ways to Get to KBD
Here are the best teleport options to reach the KBD lair:
• Burning Amulet (lava maze teleport) – run northwest
• Wilderness Obelisk to 44 wilderness – requires a hard diary
• Cemetery Teleport
• Ghorrock Teleport
• Dareeyak Teleport
Once you reach the ladder, climb down. You'll be in a room with poison spiders and a lever. Pull the lever to enter the lair. This lever also lets you leave quickly if needed. You can also deposit loot into your looting bag outside the room and then re-enter.
Example Inventory
A typical KBD inventory might include:
• Super restore potions
• Anti-fire potion or super anti-fire
• Anti-poison or Antidote++
• Ranging or combat potion
• Saradomin brews
• Teleport out (Royal Seed Pod, burning amulet, or house tab)
• Looting bag
• Optional: Thrall summoning items if using the Arceuus spellbook
Quick Prayers Setup
Adjust based on your setup, but usually:
• Protect from Magic (or Melee if in melee distance)
• Eagle Eye or Piety
• Preserve if using boosting potions
• Protect Item (optional)
RuneLite Settings Tips
• Turn on player indicators
• Enable highlighting others to spot PKers
• Check the PK skull prevention
• Set player attack options to always right-click
• Configure the looting bag to store everything on left-click
How to Start a Kill
1. Drink your anti-fire and anti-poison
2. Turn on Protect from Magic or Melee
3. Enable Protect Item if needed
4. Use your teleport method to get to the Wilderness
5. Climb down the ladder, pull the lever
6. Check how many people are in the lair with the "Commune" option
7. If it's crowded, hop worlds
8. Turn on quick prayers and enter
9. Drink stat-boosting potion
10. Make sure auto retaliate is on
11. Summon thrall (optional)
If you're using a two-handed weapon, stay out of melee range. Otherwise, stand close with Protect Melee on. Keep an eye on your potion timers. When KBD dies, that's the ideal time to heal and sip super restores.
Use Saradomin brews to heal in emergencies, but remember the 3:1 brew-to-restore sip ratio to fix your stats afterward. After each kill, if your inventory is full, pull the lever out, deposit items into your looting bag, and go back in.
Final Tips
The KBD is a low-risk, low-effort boss when done correctly. It's ideal for mid-level players or anyone grinding out a Black Dragon task. The key to success is proper preparation and quick reflexes when it comes to PKers. Always keep an escape teleport ready, and stay calm if attacked—teleport immediately or run south if you're teleblocked.
