OSRS Obby Mauler Guide
Nov-17-2025 PSTThe Obby Mauler has come a long way over the years, and 2025 is easily the most streamlined time to create one. Thanks to new quests, quality-of-life updates, and fresh Valamore content, creating a fully optimized Obby build requires far less training than ever before. In fact, you can realistically achieve 55 Slayer—the signature, grandfathered Obby Mauler requirement—without traditional slayer training at all.
This guide walks you through the most efficient route to creating a polished, fully quested Obby risk fighter using multi-questing, optimized early XP routing, and clever use of recoils and lamps.
1. The Power of Multi-Questing
Modern OSRS progression allows you to chain questlines together so efficiently that you rarely need to revisit the same area twice. By completing quests and diaries in clusters, you drastically cut down on travel time and unlock multiple layers of XP rewards simultaneously.
This guide follows that philosophy:
• Complete quests in regions before leaving
• Claim early-game XP lamps at the most optimal thresholds
• Bake diary tasks into quest routes
This approach saves hours, OSRS gold and accelerates the build dramatically.
2. Thieving to 42: Early Valamore Boost
Your first major target is 42 Thieving for the Temple of Ikov. In the past, this required manual training at cake stalls after a few easy quests. But Valamore changed everything.
Valamore offers three early-game quests that collectively push you near 42 Thieving on their own, removing the need for early manual training entirely. These quests also synergize with future unlocks for Range and Agility progression.
Getting 42 Thieving early allows you to:
• Complete every Range XP-granting quest before Chompy training
• Manage your Hitpoints XP perfectly
• Unlock cosmetics (Chompy hats) without wasting XP
3. Early Range Routing & Chompy Optimization
After your Thieving milestone, the next target is getting 34 Ranged, which unlocks the Ogre Composite Bow for Chompy hunting.
The cleanest route is:
• Complete all low-level Range quests
• Save all XP for Chompy KC
• Collect 2,000 Chompy kills (or 4,000 if you want extra HP XP flexibility)
You can complete Horror From the Deep and Jungle Potion during this phase while grabbing diary tasks like killing a jogre in the Pothole Dungeon to avoid future backtracking.
4. Strength Training: The New Zero-Training Method
Strength training on an Obby Mauler used to be a long, tedious grind.
But now? You barely train it at all. By completing the right sequence of quests: Horror From the Deep, Shadow of the Storm. You reach 30 Strength—just enough to use the Blast Furnace pumproom.
Using an idle-safe pumproom setup lets you train Strength for hours with almost no input. As long as you interact roughly every 80 minutes, the XP flows in while you focus on other tasks or even log out of real life. This method is completely within the rules and is now the gold standard for Obby strength training.
5. Slayer to 55 Without Slaying
The iconic requirement for Obby Maulers is 55 Slayer for the Berserker Necklace. Many players assume this requires dozens of tasks. Not anymore.
Your early Slayer levels come from:
• Museum Kudos lamps
• Fossil Island lamps (easy fossils)
• Karamja diary lamp
• Slayer XP reward quests
You only need to kill one monster total for Slayer XP if you're staying at 13 Prayer. If you're 31 Prayer or higher, you don’t even need that.
The big milestones include:
• Tarn’s Lair — 5,000 Slayer XP
• One Small Favour — essential for Gothic Restores
• Shilo Village — unlocks deeper quest access
• The Perilous Moons — huge XP and essential unlock
• Shadows of His Past
• Shadows of Mahtama
• Shadows of Custodia — final surge before 55 Slayer
By the time you finish the Custodia storyline, you're only a few lamps away from 55 Slayer without ever doing real Slayer tasks.
6. Handling the Perilous Moons (Low HP, No Prayer)
Even with only 40 Hitpoints and no prayer, the Perilous Moons questline is surprisingly manageable once you understand the mechanics.
Blue Moon
• Dodge tornadoes
• Light braziers fast to reduce healing
• Eat between triple-hit cycles
Blood Moon
The hardest one. Expect to use:
• 5–7 recoils if tick-perfect
• More if you take environmental damage
Any mistake can force a tactical death, but the room is very doable with clean movement.
Eclipse Moon
Easily the simplest. Its secondary special lets you deal real damage, and you’ll complete this room with few supplies.
7. Heart of Darkness: The Real Challenge
This is arguably the toughest Obby Mauler quest in the game. Completing it at extremely low levels is rare—but absolutely doable.
You’ll face:
• Multiple wave rooms where you must protect the prince while staying in combat
• Arcane with straightforward movement mechanics
• Emoxlee, with extremely high defenses
Emoxlee requires Ranged with bolt procs since all other styles deal nearly no damage. Expect to burn many recoils and dozens of bolt procs over the fight. Completing this quest at low levels is a milestone achievement for any Obby Mauler.
8. Final Stretch to 55 Slayer
After Shadows of Custodia, you’ll have: Nearly every possible XP reward claimed. Only a few lamps remain until the finish line.
Use:
• Fossil Island lamps
• Karamja diary lamp
• Quest XP rewards
• Misc. lamps from early quests
And you finally hit 55 Slayer — the signature Obby Mauler unlock. At this point your build is:
• Fully quested
• Min-maxed for all future content
• Ready for PKing, risk fights, and Obby clan events
If you want a community to join, the Obby Legion clan requires 55 Slayer and welcomes all Obby builds.
Conclusion
The 2025 landscape for Obby Maulers is better than ever. What used to take weeks of grinding can now be completed in just a few days with the right strategy. Streamlined Valamore quests, new XP-routing options, and clever multi-questing have made this iconic pure build more accessible — and more powerful — than ever before.
