OSRS Obor Guide: Strategies and Gear Setups for F2P and P2P Players

May-12-2025 PST

Obor, the Hill Giant boss in Old School RuneScape (OSRS), is one of the most accessible bosses in the game. This makes him a great starting point for new players who want to get into bossing. Available in both free-to-play (F2P) and pay-to-play (P2P) worlds, Obor is also one of the few profitable bosses for F2P players. His loot includes rune items, clue scrolls, and the valuable Hill Giant Club. For Ironmen, Obor is especially important because he's the only non-smithing method to acquire a rune kiteshield in F2P.

How to Get to Obor

Obor resides in a locked lair within the Hill Giant area of the Edgeville Dungeon. The entrance to his lair is a locked gate on the western wall of this section. To enter, you need a giant key, which is a consumable item. One key is consumed per fight, meaning you'll need to obtain a new one each time you want to challenge Obor.

Fastest Way to Edgeville Dungeon

Use an Amulet of Glory to teleport to Edgeville, then go south to find the trapdoor behind the bank. Descend into the dungeon and head south past the skeletons and zombies to reach the Hill Giant area. The gate to Obor's lair is at the western end of this room.

How to Get the Giant Key

The most reliable way to obtain a giant key is by killing hill giants, which are combat level 28. The drop rate is 1 in 128 normally, or 1 in 64 when killing them in the Wilderness.

Other monsters that drop the giant key include:

• Black Knight Titan (during the Holy Grail quest): 1/128

• Cyclopes (Warrior's Guild): 1/128

• Obor himself: 1/16 chance to drop a new key

If you're planning to farm Obor for profit or combat achievements, it's smart to collect several keys in advance.

Recommended Stats to Fight Obor

Your strategy and gear choice will depend on your combat style and stats. Obor has a combat level of 106 and 120 Hitpoints, and he attacks with both melee and ranged.

Minimum Stat Recommendations

• Magic: At least 50 Magic and 40 Prayer if using Snare. With higher defense, tanking is possible.

• Ranged: 60 Ranged, 50 Defence, and 40 Prayer for optimal performance.

• Melee: Minimum of 50 Attack, 50 Strength, and 50 Defence.

If you're low-level, the Snare method using Magic is strongly recommended.

How to Fight Obor

Obor uses melee and ranged attacks, and he has a special knockback ability that stuns and pushes you backward. He can hit up to 28 with ranged and 22 with melee. He's weakest to Magic, which makes it the most effective combat style, especially for lower-level players.

Tip: Always use Protect from Missiles to reduce ranged damage. This is the preferred protection prayer for most situations unless you're deliberately avoiding the knockback mechanic.

The Snare Method

The Snare method is ideal for lower-level players who use Magic. With 50 Magic, you can cast Snare to freeze Obor for up to 9.6 seconds. The strategy is simple:

1. Snare Obor when he approaches.

2. Move to the opposite corner of the room.

3. Attack him with Magic until he reaches you again.

4. Repeat the Snare and retreat process.

This keeps damage to a minimum but is a slower kill overall. Make sure you bring a lot of food, especially if your Defence level is low.

The Tank Method

If you have higher Defence and decent food, you can tank Obor's hits. In this case:

• Stand near a corner to avoid getting knocked too far.

• Use Protect from Melee to prevent knockbacks and stuns.

• Alternatively, use Protect from Missiles to take less overall damage.

Tank method kills are faster but riskier, so be well-prepared and bring high-healing food like lobsters or swordfish.

Combat Achievements from Obor

There are six combat achievements tied to Obor:

1. Obor Novice – Kill Obor once

2. Sleeping Giant – Kill Obor while he is immobilized

3. Fighting as Intended – Kill Obor on a F2P world

4. Back to the Wall – Kill Obor without being pushed back more than one square

5. Obor Champion – Kill Obor 5 times

6. Squashing the Giant – Kill Obor without taking prayer damage

These achievements are easy to complete with good planning and are a great introduction to boss mechanics for newer players.

Obor's Drops

An average Obor kill is worth around 24,000 GP, which is excellent for F2P content. His drop table includes consistent loot and some rarer, valuable items.

Final Thoughts

Obor is a fantastic boss for beginners in OSRS, especially F2P players or new Ironmen. With accessible requirements, decent loot, and relatively low risk, he's a good way to learn boss mechanics and start earning OSRS gold through PvM. Whether you choose to freeze him with the Snare method or face-tank his powerful hits, killing Obor is a rewarding experience.
