OSRS Sailing Alpha: A First Look at the Newest Skill in OSRS

Apr-03-2025 PST

Welcome to another OSRS deep dive. If you've been skeptical about the new Sailing skill, trust me, you're not alone. When it was first locked into the poll, I had my doubts. And as Jagex revealed more progress on streams, my excitement dwindled. However, what if I told you that the Sailing Alpha shown at RuneFest changed my mind completely? You might find yourself in the same boat (pun intended) once you try the Sailing Alpha.

Now, let's get into everything we know about the Sailing Alpha, including the tutorial quest "Pandemonium" and the four major gameplay activities for training the skill: Port Tasks, Shipwreck Salvaging, Charting the Sea, and the Barracuda Trials.

Getting Started in the Sailing Alpha

The first thing you'll need to do when logging in is select the Alpha World from the world selection menu. These worlds are marked with a dark blue color and will be at the bottom of the list. If you're new to beta or alpha testing, your progress in these worlds will not carry over to your main account, much like Leagues, Deadman Mode, or Speedrun Worlds.

Once in an Alpha World, your character will spawn at a port, where you'll see a settings box at the bottom left of your screen. Clicking this allows you to set up your character for different sailing activities, much like the way Speedrun Worlds prepares your account for specific quests. You'll receive experience, items, and access to activities including quest tasks, shipwreck salvaging, charting the sea, and Barracuda Trials.

How Long Should You Spend in the Alpha?

If you just want a quick taste of sailing, 30–40 minutes should be enough to get through the quest and try each activity once or twice. However, if you want to explore the full range of content, you should dedicate at least 90–120 minutes to fully experience the new mechanics and areas.

Exploring the Extended OSRS Map

One of the biggest surprises in the Sailing Alpha is the expansion of the world map. When you open the map, you'll notice new islands and ports near familiar locations. Jagex has also extended the map to create more room for sailing activities, though some areas like Valmore Part 3 remain empty. One particularly exciting addition is Menos, a new city in the desert. While it currently lacks icons or points of interest, it's exciting to finally see this location in-game.

Core Mechanics: How to Navigate Your Ship

Your first experience with ship movement will come during the Pandemonium quest, but here's a quick rundown if you want to skip it:

You'll start with access to a raft and a small boat, both of which function similarly.

Click on a nearby platform at a port to board your ship.

Click on the helm to start moving your boat.

If your ship collides with an object, it simply stops, requiring you to navigate around obstacles.

To disembark, move to an area marked with red flags and click on the gangplank.

While sailing, you'll see an icon at the top left of your screen with a timer. When it reaches zero, clicking on the sail grants experience and a speed boost to incentivize active engagement.

Ships also have storage chests for cargo and a hook for salvaging shipwrecks.

Jagex has also teased larger ships with additional features in later testing phases. Potential additions include cannons, upgraded storage, and multiplayer crew features.

The Pandemonium Quest: Your Introduction to Sailing

"Pandemonium" serves as a tutorial quest for the sailing skill, much like "Druidic Ritual" did for Herblore. The quest is straightforward and intuitive, ensuring new players won't feel lost. Here's a summary:

You're hired by two sailors to embark on an expedition.

They betray you after finding treasure and throw you overboard.

You wash up at a nearby port, seeking revenge.

As a reward for completing a port task, you receive a raft.

The quest sets up your journey into sailing, introducing core mechanics along the way.

The Four Main Sailing Activities

1. Port Tasks: Cargo Delivery & Trade

Port tasks are one of the most efficient ways to train sailing, offering a balance of experience and rewards. Here's how they work:

Visit a notice board at any port.

Select a task based on its sailing level requirement.

Retrieve cargo from a nearby table and store it in your ship's chest.

Travel to the designated port and unload the cargo.

Once sailing is available in multiplayer, a crew system will allow friends to help load and unload cargo for faster trips.

2. Shipwreck Salvaging: Treasure Hunting at Sea

For players who enjoy exploration, shipwreck salvaging offers a more dynamic way to gain experience:

Travel to marked shipwrecks on the map.

Use the salvage hook on your ship to pull up loot.

Different shipwrecks offer varying rewards, from raw materials to valuable artifacts.

3. Charting the Sea: Mapping the Unexplored

This activity focuses on exploration and mapping new areas of the ocean:

Travel to uncharted waters and mark points of interest.

Mapping these areas rewards players with experience and potential discoveries like hidden islands or treasure troves.

Players will be able to chart the sea with friends, creating a shared exploration experience.

4. Barracuda Trials: Combat at Sea

The most intense of the four training methods, Barracuda Trials introduce ship combat and survival elements:

Your ship takes damage from hostile NPC ships or environmental hazards.

Completing trials successfully rewards combat-related sailing experience.

Future updates could introduce PvP naval battles, expanding this activity further.

Final Thoughts: The Future of Sailing in OSRS

Sailing is shaping up to be one of the most engaging and innovative skills in OSRS. While initial skepticism was understandable, the Sailing Alpha at RuneFest showcased a skill with immersive mechanics, rewarding exploration, and diverse training methods.

With expanded world maps, cargo trading, shipwreck salvaging, cartography, and naval combat, sailing has something for everyone. If Jagex continues to build on this strong foundation, sailing could become one of OSRS's most beloved skills.
