OSRS Sailing Skill - Guide to Prepare for Update

Nov-07-2025 PST

Old School RuneScape’s newest skill, Sailing, finally has a release date — and it’s coming much sooner than expected. Jagex has officially confirmed that Sailing will set sail on November 19th, less than a month away.

That means now is the time to prepare — not only for leveling the new skill itself, but also for how its release will impact the entire OSRS economy. Just like with every major update, a market shift is inevitable. In this article, we’ll go over how to protect your bank, what to buy and sell before launch, and how to profit once the seas open up.

1. Protecting Your Bank Before the Crash

Let’s be honest — every veteran RuneScape player knows that whenever a major update drops, the Grand Exchange crashes. The pattern is as old as the game itself. Players liquidate their banks, merchants manipulate markets, and the only items that hold or rise in value are those directly tied to the new content.

The last major crash occurred with the Delve Boss release, which caused significant price drops in iconic items like the Voidwaker, Inquisitor’s Armor, and Dragon Claws — all staples of high-level PvM.

With Sailing on the horizon, history is about to repeat itself — but on an even larger scale.

Top players will be racing not just to 99 Sailing, but to 200 million XP, burning through vast amounts of OSRS gold and resources to reach the top of the high scores. As a result, high-value items like Tumeken’s Shadow and other mega rares are already dropping rapidly, and we’re still weeks away from release.

Meanwhile, even basic consumables such as Chaos Runes, Dragon Darts, and Dragon Bones are trending downward as players sell off everything to stockpile cash. Why? Because cash will have immense buying power once Sailing goes live.

What’s Causing the Market Dip?

A large part of this volatility comes from merchanting clans preparing to control the new market. Sailing will introduce:

· Four new types of logs from Woodcutting

· Four new ores from Mining

· A variety of high-healing fish from Fishing

· New Herblore ingredients and Farming seeds

· Fresh Crafting and Fletching materials

Merchants are liquidating their current investments to build capital, planning to corner these new resources early. Once they control the supply, they’ll control the price.

So how do you protect your bank? Sell anything you don’t use. If an item isn’t essential to your gameplay, convert it into GP. That way, you’ll have liquidity when the market inevitably dips — and the flexibility to buy back in when prices stabilize.

2. What to Keep and What to Sell

While it might sound tempting to liquidate everything, not all items are worth selling. For example, PvM gear should generally be held, especially if you actively use it. With the 2% GE tax, selling and rebuying items can lead to huge GP losses in taxes alone.

However, food and consumables are another story. Sailing introduces an entirely new set of high-tier fish, which will make many existing options obsolete.

The New Fishing Meta

Sailing will add eight new types of fish and two brand-new fishing methods, with level requirements ranging from 52 to 91. Some of these fish come with unique effects that will completely change PvM and PvP food metas. For example:

· Haddock heals 18 HP and overheals up to 10 HP — a low-HP alternative to Anglerfish.

· Yellowfin Tuna heals 19 HP and restores 20% run energy, making it ideal for PvMers and PKers.

· Halibut heals 20 HP and is combo food, similar to Karambwans — expect this to become the new PvP standard.

· Bluefin Tuna heals 22 HP and restores 5 prayer points.

· Marlin, the new best-in-slot food, heals 24 HP, surpassing Anglerfish and Dark Crabs.

With so many new options coming, existing fish prices will likely tank. If you have Anglers, Karambwans, or other consumables, consider selling them before launch.

3. Construction Will Be Key

If there’s one skill to train before November 19th, it’s Construction. Sailing’s mechanics are deeply tied to shipbuilding, and many features require Construction levels up to 84. Even Jagex developers have openly stated that “Construction will be your best friend at launch.”

You’ll need Construction supplies to build and upgrade your ship — and potentially even to train Sailing itself. Stockpiling planks, nails, logs, and bars is a smart move.

For example, early-level ship construction will use:

· Regular planks (Lv. 1)

· Oak planks (Lv. 8)

· Teak planks (Lv. 23)

· Mahogany planks (Lv. 41)

Once higher-level planks from Sailing are introduced, they’ll be expensive and scarce. So, preparing now with existing materials could give you a significant head start.

4. Early Sailing Money-Making Methods

Whether you’re a skiller, a casual player, or a PvMer, offers massive money-making potential.

For Skillers

· Woodcutting: Chop and sell the new trees — early demand for logs and planks will be sky-high.

· Fishing: Catch the new fish and sell them before prices stabilize.

· Mining and Smithing: Mine the four new ores (Lv. 25–74) and smelt them into bars and cannonballs.

Even low-to-mid-level players can make serious profits during the first few weeks just by gathering new resources.

5. New PvM Content and Drops

Sailing isn’t just about exploration — it’s bringing an entire suite of new PvM monsters to the game.

Aquanites

· Require 78 Slayer and 73 Sailing

· Drop the Aquanite Tendon, used to create the new Aquanite Hopper, a mid-tier ranged off-hand that occasionally fires a second bolt.

Lava Strykewyrms

· Require 62 Slayer and 60 Sailing

· Drop Dragon Sheets, used for ship upgrades and crafting Dragon Cannonballs — likely a highly valuable resource.

Frost Dragons

· Require 87 Sailing, no Slayer level

· Drop Frost Dragon Bones and Dragon Sheets

· Expected to be one of the best GP/hour PvM activities on launch

Griffins & the Shellbane Griffin Boss

· Require 51 Slayer and 45 Sailing

· Drop Horn of Plenty, a Hunter off-hand that boosts Hunter levels and can double loot.

· The Shellbane Griffin is OSRS’s new lowest-level Slayer boss, dropping the Gleaming Rapier, a tier-65 stab weapon.

6. Final Thoughts — Enjoy the Journey

The arrival of Sailing marks a historic moment for Old School RuneScape. It’s the first new skill in over a decade, and it’s set to reshape both the economy and gameplay experience across Gielinor.

As the release date draws near, take time to prepare your bank, stock essential supplies, and set your goals for launch day. Whether you’re aiming for 99 Sailing, exploring new islands, or farming the new PvM bosses, remember — this kind of update doesn’t come often.
