OSRS Sailing Update: Gryphon and Shellbane Boss Farming Guide

Dec-19-2025 PST

Old School RuneScape’s newest skill, Sailing, has brought a wealth of content for players, and one of the most exciting additions is the gryphon—a new early-game Slayer creature. Gryphons are not only easy to farm but also drop valuable items that are useful for both making money and progressing your Ironman account. This guide will cover everything you need to know about both regular Gryphons and the Shellbane Gryphon boss, including mechanics, gear, and optimal farming strategies.

Regular Gryphons

Location and Access

Gryphons are found on the island of Great Conch. To unlock access:

· Reach level 45 Sailing and level 51 Slayer.

· Complete the quest Troubled Tortugans to gain full access to the island.

There are two gryphon caves on Great Conch:

· Northwest cave: Regular Gryphons

· Southeast cave: Slayer-task-only Gryphons

Each cave has single-way combat areas and multi-way combat areas. The southernmost room is multi-way, which is ideal for using a Dwarf cannon.

Stats and Weaknesses

Attack Type Bonus

Stab +10

Slash +20

Crush +40

Magic +100 (50% Air weakness)

Darts +60

Arrows +60

Bolts +60

Mechanics

The key mechanic to watch out for with regular Gryphons is the weight mechanic:

· Your character must wear armour weighing above 30 kg.

· If under 30 kg, the Gryphon can blast you a few tiles away, stunning and dealing damage even through Protect from Melee.

· If above 30 kg, the Gryphon will stun itself, allowing you to land an extra hit.

For players with Bigger and Badder unlocked, the superior variant is the Dire Gryphon. Equip the Tortugan shield to counter its special attack and avoid being thrown backwards.

Recommended Gear

Maximising your kill efficiency requires the right setup. Key points:

· Weight: At least 30 kg to counter the Gryphon blast

· Weapons: Preferably stab weapons; slash weapons like Abyssal whip also work

· Cannon: Use a Dwarf cannon in the multi-way room for faster kills

Suggested Gear:

· Helmet: Slayer Helmet / Black Mask

· Neck: Amulet of Rancour / Torture

· Cape: Infernal / Fire Cape (or Tortugan shield if needed for weight)

· Body/Legs: Torva / Bandos / Oathplate / Proselyte

· Weapon: Belle’s Folly / Gharazi Rapier / Abyssal Whip

· Shield: Avernic / Dragon Defender / Dragonfire Shield

· Boots: Avernic Threads / Primordial / Dragon boots

· Gloves: Ferocious / Barrows gloves

· Ring: Ultor / Berserker ring

· Inventory: Dwarf cannon with cannonballs, divine super combat potions, prayer potions, Tortugan shield, herb sack

Drops to Prioritise

Most Gryphon drops are minor, but key items to pick up include:

· Gryphon feathers – Always

· Snape grass seeds – 1/1365

· Herbs – Guams to dwarf weeds

· Mithril cannonballs – 1/21

· Adamant cannonballs – 1/64

· Horn of Plenty – 1/2500 off task, 1/1000 on task (~5M gold)

Shellbane Gryphon – The Boss

The Shellbane Gryphon is a boss variant that can only be fought on a Slayer task. It is found in the same Great Conch caves but requires more preparation.

Stats

Attack Type Bonus

Stab +10

Slash +20

Crush +40

Magic +100 (50% Air weakness)

Darts +60

Arrows +60

Bolts +60

· Hitpoints: 400 (vs. 120 for regular Gryphons)

Mechanics

1. Knockback:

  · Deals 30 unavoidable damage if your weight is under 40 kg.

  · Equip Tortugan shield and maintain a weight >40 kg to mitigate.

  · Birds circling its head indicate knockback—click quickly to interrupt.

2. Corrosive Spit:

  · Fires a unique poison projectile. Step one tile away to avoid it.

  · Poison is removed by unequipping armour or ignored if the DPS is high enough.

3. Whirlwind:

  · Whirlwinds spawn on your tile, up to five. Move one tile per hit to avoid stacking damage.

Tip: Leave and re-enter the cave between kills to reset the boss quickly.

Final Tips

Gryphons are excellent early-game Slayer content. Whether farming regular Gryphons for feathers and early XP or taking on the Shellbane Gryphon for high-value drops like Belle’s Folly, mastering the weight mechanic and understanding boss mechanics is key. For players struggling with gear, consider visiting an OSRS store to acquire essential equipment efficiently.

With practice, Gryphons become a smooth and profitable part of your Slayer rotation. Good luck stacking those Slayer points, feathers, and OSRS gold!
