OSRS Shellbane Griffin Guide: Requirements, Setup, Mechanics, and Rewards
Jan-15-2026 PSTThe Shellbane Griffin—often jokingly introduced as the Yorkshire Pudding of bosses—is one of the simplest mid-level encounters in Old School RuneScape. It is designed to be quick, repeatable, and accessible for anyone with basic Slayer progression. If you can kill Scurrius, you can kill the Shellbane Griffin. This guide breaks down everything you need to know: requirements, gear, travel, mechanics, and rewards.
Requirements
To fight the Shellbane Griffin, you need the following:
Slayer Requirements
· 51 Slayer
· Must be on a Griffin slayer task
· Exception: You may kill it off-task if it is required for an Elite clue scroll step.

Unlock Requirements
Before receiving Griffin tasks, you must:
1. Spend 80 Slayer points to unlock Griffins at any Slayer master.
2. Complete the quest Trouble Tortugans.
Recommended Stats
No hard stat requirements exist beyond Protect from Melee, making the fight extremely forgiving. As a general rule:
· If you can handle Scurrius, you can absolutely handle this boss.
Gear Setup
You will be using melee for this fight. The key consideration is not accuracy or max hit, but weight.
Why Weight Matters
The Shellbane Griffin has a special knockback attack that deals up to 30 damage if your equipped gear weighs under 40 kg.
· This ONLY counts equipped items, not inventory weight.
· You must check your equipment weight with your inventory empty when planning gear.
With 40 kg+ of equipped weight, this mechanic is completely disabled, letting you ignore one of the boss’s three total mechanics.
Recommended Gear
Pick your best melee gear as long as you reach the 40 kg threshold. Options include:
· Helmet:
· Slayer helmet (on task) or
· Black mask (note: weighs more, making weight management easier)
· Weapon:
Black mask (note: weighs more, makingA byssal tentacle whip
Black mask (note: weighs more, makingOsmumten’s fang
Black mask (note: weighs more, makingDragon claws or DDS for special attacks
Shield:
· Anything heavy helps.
· A Dragonfire shield adds significant weight.
· You may swap to a defender for more DPS, but ensure weight stays above 40 kg.
· Cape:
· Tortugan shield cape (very heavy and nearly mandatory for weight)
Special Attack Note
If you bring a two-handed spec weapon, your weight may temporarily drop below 40 kg while it’s equipped.
This means:
· Spec quickly.
· Switch back immediately to your main weapon + heavy shield/cape.
If you take one knockback hit, it’s not run-ending, but avoiding it makes the fight cleaner.
Inventory Setup
The fight is short, so supplies are minimal:
· Special attack weapon (claws, DDS, lightbearer setup, etc.)
· Super combats
· Prayer potions (primary item—you will pray Protect from Melee + Piety the entire kill)
· A few pieces of food
· Bones to Peaches tablets (optional; boss drops big bones)
· Book of the Dead + attack spell runes (optional for additional DPS)
· Alchs or empty slots to avoid juggle issues
Most players leave 2–3 spare inventory slots free for drops. Some prefer more banking trips over juggling; this is personal preference.
How to Get There
The Shellbane Griffin is located beneath the Great Conch.
Fastest Method
· Fairy Ring: CJQ
· Run north to the dungeon entrance.
Alternative
· Sail to the Great Conch (if you inexplicably do not have fairy rings unlocked)
A bank sits just south of the fairy ring, making resupplying fast.
The Fight
Once inside, pot up and turn on:
· Protect from Melee
· Piety / Chivalry / your best offensive prayer
The Shellbane Griffin only has three mechanics—and with 40 kg+ of gear, one is disabled. You will only interact with two mechanics during the fight.
Mechanic 1: Orange Corrosive Attack
· The Griffin launches an orange projectile at your current tile.
· Move one tile in any direction immediately.
· If you fail to dodge:
· Your gear becomes “corroded” for 18 total damage over several ticks (yellow splats).
· You can unequip gear to reduce the damage, but it’s rarely worth the effort.
· Most players simply tank the damage.
Mechanic 2: Whirlwind Attack
· The Griffin summons five consecutive whirlwinds under your character.
· Solution:
· Move one tile after each whirlwind spawns.
· You can continue attacking between movements for extra DPS.
· Do NOT wait until the fifth whirlwind before moving:
· A massive “super whirlwind” may hit you for up to 50 damage.
Mechanic 3 (Negated by Weight)
The knockback attack that deals up to 30 damage does not occur if you wear 40+ kg equipped weight.
Minor Attack: Gray Missile
· A ranged attack.
· Cannot be dodged.
· Deals negligible damage or none at all.
· Effectively ignorable.
Kill Time
Most players kill the boss easily within a few cycles of mechanics. The fight is extremely forgiving, with almost no risk of death.
Rewards and Loot Table
The Shellbane Griffin is not a high-tier boss, so the loot reflects its accessibility. However, it does drop some useful items:
Guaranteed
· Griffin feathers
· Used to charge the Horn of Plenty, a valuable item for boosting Hunter activities.
Notable Drops
· Tarnish Belly’s Folly (1/400)
· Requires 70 Smithing to convert into Belly’s Folly, a mid-tier stab weapon similar to a zombie axe.
· Not best-in-slot, but fills a niche early- to mid-game gap.
· Cursed Vatet
· Jar drop
Standard Loot
· Cannonballs
· Rune scimitars
· Rune claws
· Herbs and seeds
· Elite clue scrolls
· Alchables
Profit Expectation
· Results vary heavily with RNG.
· One player reported approximately. 5M OSRS gold from a single task, including two Belly’s Follies in only 51 kills—well above average luck.
Final Thoughts
The Shellbane Griffin is one of OSRS’s easiest Slayer bosses. With simple one-tile movement, a small handful of mechanics, and nearly no risk, it is an excellent low-stress task that can still provide solid mid-tier value. If you have the task unlocked, it is absolutely worth completing.
If you find yourself struggling with boss mechanics in general—or want to sharpen skills for late-game challenges such as the Inferno, Gauntlet, Colosseum, and raids—consider working on movement drills, prayer switching, and positional awareness. Even simple bosses like the Shellbane Griffin can help build habits that translate into high-level PvM success.
