Quick OSRS Alchemical Hydra Guide

Sep-13-2025 PST

The Alchemical Hydra is one of the most popular Slayer bosses in Old School RuneScape, offering valuable drops like the Hydra Claw, Hydra Tail, and the Hydra Heart used to make the Brimstone Ring. While the fight may seem intimidating at first, learning its mechanics and movement patterns makes it very manageable. This quick guide will walk you through everything you need to know for a smooth kill.

Requirements

· 95 Slayer to fight the Alchemical Hydra.

· Access to Mount Karuulm (via Karuulm teleport, fairy rings, or nearby teleports).

· Protective gear: Boots of stone (or better, such as boots of brimstone) to avoid taking damage from the hot floor.

Recommended Gear

· Weapon: Dragon Hunter Lance (ideal for melee) or other strong melee weapons.

· Helmet: Slayer helmet (imbued preferred).

· Armor: Best melee setup available.

· Inventory:

  · Antidote++ (or similar poison protection)

  · Super combat potion

  · Prayer potions

  · Combo food (e.g., shark + karambwan)

  · Teleports to bank/house

  · Runes for Thralls (if available)

Getting There

1. Use the Mount Karuulm teleport for direct access.

2. If unavailable, use a fairy ring (CIR) and take the nearby shortcut.

3. Travel down the elevator, pass through the mysterious pipe, and you'll reach the Hydra's lair.

If you die during a kill, items will be held by the NPC just outside the lair, so don't panic.

Marking Tiles

Marking tiles is crucial for learning Hydra's mechanics.

· Place marks near the entrance pipe and along the arena where you'll need to move during phases.

· Proper tile marking makes dodging attacks and flame walls much easier.

Fight Mechanics

The Hydra has four distinct phases, each tied to a different head color. It always attacks in sets of three before switching styles.

General Attack Pattern

· Hydra alternates between Magic and Ranged.

· Magic: Projectiles come from above.

· Ranged: Projectiles come from below.

· After every third attack, Hydra will attempt a poison spit.

· Watch for Hydra's head bounce — this signals a switch in attack style.

Phase 1: Green Head

· Attacks with Magic or Ranged.

· Use Protect from Missiles (Ranged) as the default.

· After three attacks, Hydra spits poison — sip Antidote++ if needed.

Phase 2: Blue Head

· Stand on the marked tiles to lure Hydra onto the chemical vents to remove its defense.

· Hydra will unleash electric blue pools on the floor — move between marked safe spots to avoid damage.

Phase 3: Red Head

· Hydra drags you into a corner and creates flame walls.

· When the flames touch the wall, quickly move to the marked tile to avoid being trapped.

· Continue DPS while avoiding fire damage.

Phase 4: Black Head (Jad Phase)

· Hydra alternates prayers like Jad from Fight Caves.

· The first attack will always be the opposite of the prayer you are currently using.

· Switch prayers after every attack: Protect from Missiles → Protect from Magic → repeat.

· After the third attack, expect poison again.

This is the most punishing phase — focus on prayers above all else.

Thralls & Utility

· Summoning Thralls (if you have the Arceuus spellbook unlocked) adds consistent DPS throughout the fight.

· Use Piety for maximum melee damage.

Example Kill Walkthrough

1. Sip super combat potion, activate Protect from Missiles, and enter the fight.

2. Track Hydra's attack count — switch prayers every three hits.

3. Move to marked tiles during blue and red phases to avoid environmental damage.

4. In the final phase, switch prayers carefully like in a Jad fight.

5. Finish Hydra off while managing poison, prayer, and positioning.

Loot & Rewards

Hydra drops valuable items, including:

· Hydra Claw (used to create the Dragon Hunter Lance).

· Hydra Leather (crafted into the Ferocious Gloves).

· Hydra Tail, Heart, and Eye (combined into the Brimstone Ring).

· Notable raw GP drops like alchables, bones, and herbs.

In the example kill, the Hydra dropped a Hydra Heart, completing the Brimstone Ring for a profit of around 3 million GP.

Final Tips

· Always bring boots that protect against the hot floor unless you've completed the Karuulm elite diary.

· Tile markers make the fight dramatically easier — don't skip this step.

· Don't panic if you get poisoned or dragged; focus on prayer switching and positioning.

With practice, the Alchemical Hydra becomes a very consistent and profitable boss, easily farmable for Slayer points and OSRS gold.
