The OSRS Meta in 2025: Yama and Ostoak Are Changing

Apr-08-2025 PST

OSRS has always thrived on its ability to evolve while remaining true to its nostalgic roots. In 2025, we're witnessing one of the most impactful years in OSRS endgame PvM history. With the introduction of two massive bosses—The Yama of Pax and Ostoak, the Doom of Moahhat—we're seeing dramatic shifts in the way players approach gear, mechanics, and group coordination. These bosses, along with their powerful item rewards and new systems, are redefining the high-level meta in ways that can only be described as game-changing.

Let's dive into the details of both encounters and explore just how they're shaping the future of OSRS.

Yama of Pax – Duo-Focused Mayhem

Originally seen briefly during the A Kingdom Divided questline, the Byama boss has been transformed into a fully-fledged endgame duo boss: Yama of Pax. Designed with group play in mind, this fight is intended to be more difficult than the Desert Treasure II bosses, setting a high bar for coordination and combat efficiency. While Yama can technically be soloed, it won't scale down, meaning brave solo players will face extreme challenges for the full loot pool.

The fight includes a contract system—similar to awakened variants or Colosseum invocations—that lets players customize the difficulty and rewards. While Jagex insists it isn't a copy-paste of the Tombs of Amascut invocation system, it serves a similar purpose: reward scaling based on challenge.

But beyond the fight itself, Yama introduces several key items and mechanics that drastically alter how we think about special attack regeneration and melee combat efficiency.

Special Attack Regeneration: The Power Creep Continues

Before 2025, we already had tools like:

Natural regen: 10% every 30 seconds (5 minutes for full bar).

Death Charge spell: Restores 15% spec on kill.

Lightbearer ring: Doubles natural regen (spec every 2.5 minutes).

With Yama's release, we now have two more major tools to stack special attack regeneration even further:

1. Surge Potion – The Untradeable Spec Juice

This new potion, crafted with Demonic Tallow (a drop from Yama) and a Torstol potion, gives players 25% special attack energy on a 5-minute cooldown. While that cooldown may sound extreme, it's the only thing keeping this item from being overpowered.

 Herblore level required: 81

 Potion is untradeable

 Likely four doses per potion

This potion is especially potent in long, timed challenges like the Colosseum or speedruns where managing your spec bar efficiently can be the difference between a sub-20 or a wipe.

The Surge Potion cooldown also resets anywhere an Imbued Heart does—deaths, POH pool, raids, etc.—making it a great option for safe training or PvM sessions with planned resets.

2. Upgraded Death Charge – Now With Extra Juice

Yama also introduces a major upgrade to the Death Charge spell via a rare drop from his Gargantuan Grimoire. Previously, Death Charge could be used every 60 seconds and restored 15% spec on a monster kill. The upgraded version allows you to:

Restore up to 30% per minute

Kill up to two monsters per cast

 Still works once per minute

This makes the spell exponentially more valuable in multi-target PvM environments like the Inferno, God Wars Dungeon minions, and especially the Colosseum, where kill frequency is high.

The Soul Flame Horn – Melee Spec Accuracy to the Max

Perhaps the most exciting new item from Yama is the Soul Flame Horn—a unique support-based special attack weapon. Its effect is revolutionary:

Grants 100% accuracy on the next melee hit-splat for nearby allies (within 2 tiles).

Affects you and up to 4 others (5 people max).

Consumes 25% spec per ally affected.

Only the first hit-splat is guaranteed to land (not full weapons like scythe multi-hits).

This is designed specifically to help land key special attacks in high-defense environments. Imagine guaranteed Dragon Warhammer hits on Sotetseg, Tecton, or Akkha—this item could be meta-defining for group PvM and raids.

While the Horn is best used in duos for spec efficiency, it opens the door to new strategies in larger group content. Whether for DPS or support, the Soul Flame Horn could rival the utility of BGS, Claws, or even the Dragon Warhammer in coordinated settings.

Oath Plate Armor – A Torva Sidegrade With a Twist

The final item set from Yama is Oath Plate, a melee armor designed specifically to support slash-based accuracy. Compared to Torva, it:

 Offers higher slash accuracy

 Has lower strength bonus

Better suited for weapons like the Scythe of Vitur

Given the scythe's sensitivity to both max hit thresholds and accuracy, mix-and-match sets will likely become the new standard. We may see builds such as:

Torva helm + Oath Plate top/bottom

Oath Plate + Avernic Defender + Soulreaper Axe

Custom PvM kits depending on the boss's defense profile

The armor is obtained via shards dropped by Yama, combined with a new ore from a 2025 mining update. This means some players may choose to grind and smith their Oath Plate armor over time—akin to earning your own Torva, piece by piece.

Later in 2025: Ostoak and the Delve System

After the dust from Yama settles, we'll be heading deeper underground with Ostoak, the Doom of Moahhat—Old School's first Delve-style enrage boss. Delves bring a fresh take on PvM progression:

Each kill increases the difficulty (Delve Level up to 8)

 Boss mechanics speed up

 Arena hazards increase

Some loot only available at higher Delve Levels

It's a PvM format that rewards consistency, mastery, and risk. Think Solak or Telos from RS3, but tailored for OSRS's unique tick-based combat.

Delve Boss Rewards – Truly Endgame

The rewards from Ostoak have gone through many iterations, but three standout items have been confirmed:

1. Eye of AAK – The Shadow Challenger

A new powered staff meant to bridge the gap between Trident and Shadow of Tumeken, the Eye of AAK brings something rare to OSRS: a fast 3-tick casting speed.

Deals 15–18% more DPS than Sanguinesti

Can out-DPS Shadow in cap-limited environments (e.g., Zulrah)

Special attack: 50% spec for +30% max hit and magic defense drain

This mage BGS special adds incredible versatility and power. Combined with its casting speed and 8-tile range, it becomes one of the most desirable staves for solo PvM, chambers, and anything magic-based with stat scaling.

2. Avernic Treads – Best-in-Slot for All Styles

These hybrid boots are game-defining:

Best Strength bonus in the boot slot

 Best Ranged Strength

 Best Magic Damage bonus

They start uncharged, but you can upgrade them with each of the Cerberus boots:

 Primordial → Strength

 Pegasian → Ranged Strength

 Eternal → Magic Damage

Even in their base state, they're best-in-slot. Once upgraded, they offer up to +6 Strength, +3 Ranged Strength, and +3% Magic Damage—making them the ultimate one-slot solution for PvM, especially in spaces where boot switches were previously impractical.

3. Demon Tears – The Passive Weapon Fuel

Demon Tears are used to charge the Eye of AAK, but they can also be passively earned just by having the weapon in your inventory during Delves. This creates a cool reward loop: bring the staff, use it, and earn fuel.

Final Thoughts: The Future of OSRS PvM

2025 marks a turning point in the OSRS endgame meta. The introduction of powerful new regeneration mechanics, hybrid BIS gear, and unique PvM formats like Delves demonstrates Jagex's commitment to modernizing combat without losing the soul of OSRS. Players who embrace these new mechanics will have a clear edge in high-level content. We're now in an era where team coordination, gear synergy, and spec management are more important than ever.

If you're an endgame player, it's time to:

 Rethink your special attack rotations

 Upgrade your gear loadouts

Prepare for team-based PvM like never before

And if you're not endgame yet? Well, there's never been a better time to start the grind.

The future of Old School is now—and it's looking brutally fun.

What are you most excited about from Yama or the Delve boss? Do you have a wild theory on how the Soul Flame Horn might revolutionize raids? Let me know—let's talk meta!
