The Top 5 Fastest Ways to Earn XP in OSRS

Apr-15-2025 PST

OSRS features 23 unique skills, each offering diverse mechanics, rewards, and training methods. Leveling up your skills to 99 (or beyond for virtual levels) is a cornerstone of the OSRS experience. From gathering and production skills like Mining and Herblore to combat-based ones like Attack and Ranged, every skill comes with its grind and glory.

If you've ever browsed our blog before, you know we've compiled in-depth training guides for each skill in the game. But today, we're not going to focus on traditional methods. This article is for the elite—the ones with massive OSRS gold stacks, maxed mains, and zero patience for slow XP. We're diving into the top 5 fastest and most efficient XP-gaining methods in the entire game, even if most of them will set your gold stack ablaze.

Whether you're chasing a max cape, 200M in all skills, or just looking to flex your bank with style, this guide will showcase the absolute top-tier ways to grind XP in OSRS.

1. Crafting & Smithing – Crystal Armor Bodies

• Skills trained: Crafting & Smithing

• XP rate: 10M XP/hour (each skill)

• Cost: ~4B GP

• Requirement: Song of the Elves, 74 Crafting and Smithing

When it comes to raw XP per hour, nothing in the game comes close to crafting crystal armor bodies. This method can achieve 20 million combined XP/hour—10M for Crafting and 10M for Smithing. That's 200M XP in just 20 hours, which is downright absurd by OSRS standards.

How it works:

• Complete Song of the Elves and unlock Prifddinas.

• Use the Singing Bowl to create Crystal Bodies (requires 3 Crystal Armor Seeds + 150 Crystal Shards per body).

• You only need 27 armor seeds, since you'll be reverting bodies to retrieve the seeds.

• For shards, buy Enhanced Crystal Teleport Seeds and exchange them with Amrod.

• Use the Menu Entry Swapper plugin to revert bodies quicker.

Each cycle of crafting and reverting nine bodies gives 67,500 XP in both Crafting and Smithing. Loop this process as fast as you can, and you'll watch the XP fly.

Reality check: It'll cost you about 4B GP to get from level 74 to 99 using this method—but time is money, right?

Alternative Smithing XP:

• Blast Furnace Gold Bars

  o XP Rate: ~380K/hour

  o Cost: ~12M GP

o Requires Goldsmith Gauntlets (Family Crest quest) and Ice Gloves.

Alternative Crafting XP:

• Black d'hide bodies

  o XP Rate: 440K–450K/hour

o Requires 84 Crafting and an optional Costume Needle (from Death on the Isle quest).

2. Construction – Crystal & Demonic Thrones

• Skill trained: Construction

• XP rate: Up to 14M XP/hour

• Cost: ~184B GP

• Requirement: 95–99 Construction

Construction has long been one of the most expensive skills in OSRS, but if you've got the wealth of a merchant empire, nothing beats building thrones.

The throne method:

• Crystal Thrones (95 Construction):

o Requires 15 Magic Stones each.

o Gives 15,000 XP per throne.

  o XP Rate: ~7.2M XP/hour.

• Demonic Thrones (99 Construction):

o Requires 25 Magic Stones each.

o Gives 25,000 XP per throne.

  o XP Rate: Up to 14M XP/hour.

Use your butler to bring planks and materials quickly, and just build-throne-repeat. With enough gold and click-speed, you could hit 200M XP in 15 hours flat.

Warning: Demonic thrones cost ~184B GP from 99 to 200M Construction. That's not a typo.

Alternative Construction Method:

• Gnome Benches

o Requires Mahogany Planks and level 77+

o Build two benches side-by-side in your garden room for max efficiency.

  o XP Rate: ~1.1M XP/hour

  o Cost: ~179M GP

3. Fletching – Dragon Darts

• Skill trained: Fletching

• XP rate: 3–5M XP/hour

• Cost: ~3.8K per dart

• Requirement: 95 Fletching

Next up is Fletching, one of the most “click-intensive” skills when done right. Dragon darts might not look like much at first, but the XP rates are downright insane.

How to do it:

• Have level 95 Fletching.

• Stockpile Dragon Dart Tips and Feathers in advance (buy limit is low).

• Enable one-click dart fletching in your settings.

• Spam your mouse like your XP depends on it—because it does.

If you can keep up the pace and click like a machine, you can reach up to 5M XP/hour. A more reasonable average is around 3M XP/hour, still making it one of the fastest methods in the game.

Pro Tip: Dragon dart tips are relatively cheap, making this method much more cost-efficient than Construction or Crystal Crafting.

4. Prayer – Superior Dragon Bones at Chaos Altar

• Skill trained: Prayer

• XP rate: 2M XP/hour

• Cost: High

• Requirement: 70+ Prayer

Training Prayer the traditional way can be mind-numbingly slow. But with Superior Dragon Bones and the Wilderness Chaos Altar, you can speed things up drastically.

Why Chaos Altar?

• 50% chance not to consume bones.

• Nearby NPC to un-note bones.

• Higher XP than Gilded Altar or POH.

How to do it:

• Bring noted superior dragon bones.

• Use the unnoter NPC nearby to exchange.

• Manually use bones on the altar (don't auto-offer).

• Zoom your camera in and position your inventory near the altar for max speed.

Beware: This is in Wilderness Level 38, so getting PKed is a real risk. Some players hire clans to protect them. Others just take the risk. Either way, the rewards are worth it—if you survive.

Alternative:

• Use Gilded Altar in your (or a friend's) POH.

o Hire runners to bring bones for you.

  o Slower but safe.

o Less efficient, but you won't lose bones to PKers.

5. Ranged – Chinchompas at Maniacal Monkeys

• Skill trained: Ranged

• XP rate: Up to 1M XP/hour

• Cost: High

• Requirement: 65+ Ranged, Monkey Madness II

For combat skills, Ranged can be trained extremely fast using chinchompas—especially black chins—at Maniacal Monkeys in Kruk's Dungeon.

How to do it:

• Complete Monkey Madness II and access Kruk's Dungeon.

• Use black chinchompas for max XP (red chins are cheaper but slower).

• Equip Full Void Ranged, or gear focused on Prayer bonus.

• Use Rigour, Protect from Melee, and auto-retaliate.

• Stack monkeys in one tile by running around in L-shaped patterns or using alt accounts to force the monkeys to stack.

With the right setup and gear, you can get around 1M XP/hour using black chins.

Pro Tip: Use a Bonecrusher Necklace (requires Morytania Hard Diary) to maintain your Prayer without needing potions.

Alternative:

• Use Red Chinchompas to save money.

  o XP Rate: ~800K/hour

o Slightly slower, but more budget-friendly.

Final Thoughts

Here's a quick summary of the top XP methods:

Method Skill(s) XP Rate Cost

Crystal Bodies Crafting & Smithing 10M XP/hr each ~4B GP

Thrones Construction Up to 14M XP/hr ~184B GP

Dragon Darts Fletching 3–5M XP/hr ~3.8K/dart

Chaos Altar Bones Prayer 2M XP/hr High

Black Chinchompas Ranged 1M XP/hr High

If you're chasing efficiency and you have the GP to burn, these methods will get you to your XP goals fast. While many of these are prohibitively expensive for the average player, they showcase the upper limits of efficiency in Old School RuneScape.
